PPTP remote access ports dissapear - HELP PLEASE!

I have a windows 2003 small business server, service pack 2 with all the
latest updates. I have enabled 10 pptp wan miniports for remote users to vpn
from home to the office. There are also 10 L2TP wan miniports. Everything
works great and people can vpn remotely using the microsoft built in client
on xp.

HOWEVER, every few weeks, the 10 PPTP ports disappear!! I go into the
Routing and Remote Access interface and the ports are not listed!! At that
point, obviously no one can VPN in again. If i simply reboot the server, the
ports reappear in "Administrative Tools > Routing and Remote Access" and
everything works great. There are no event viewer messages that seem to
relate to this and i can see absoutely no pattern as to when the ports
disappear.

Is there a setting for how long these ports stay active???

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jorge,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that the WAN Miniports (PPTP)
ports disappear from the RRAS console. If I have misunderstood the problem,
please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, SBS have wizard to configure the VPN, we do not need
to manually configure the VPN in RRAS. I suggest we try the following steps
to reconfigure the VPN on SBS via recommended wizards to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1) Disable RRAS

a. Schedule a network down time.

b. Please open Routing and Remote Access console on SBS thru run command
"rrasmgmt.msc"

c. Right click the SBSname (local), select Disable Routing and Remote
Access console

2) Run CEICW on SBS

You have to rerun the CEICW to make sure your SBS 2003 server have right
network configuration. Go through the follow KB and Rerun CEICW again
carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

3) Run Remote Access wizard

a. On the Small Business Server 2003-based server, click To Do List in the
left pane of the Server Management console.

b. Under Network Tasks, click Configure Remote Access.

c. Click Next, click Enable Remote Access, click to select the VPN Access
check box, and then click Next.

d. Type the fully qualified public domain name (your public DNS name) of
your server, click Next, and then click Finish.

e. When the wizard is completed, click Close.

4) Then you can access RWW to download Connection Manager or copy the file
from SBS server c:\ ClientApps\Connection Manager\SBSPackage.exe. Please
save the sbspackage.exe file in VPN client computer. Then double-click
SBSPackage.exe to run it. After this file run the "connect to small
business server" will be created and you can use it to connect VPN to your
SBS server.

Then, monitor the VPN on SBS. If the issue happen again, please let me know.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

I had similar problem. Some time server rebooting back without any
network connectivity. I have to manually turn off RRAS and reboot then
enable & reconfig RRAS. Tried new NIC driver and, SP2 no help. I don't
know what to do.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

First please perform the steps in my previous reply. If the issue persists
after you finish the steps, please go to the following:

Step 1: Please install the following hotfix:

You may experience network-related problems after you install Windows
Server 2003 SP2 or the Scalable Networking Pack on a Windows Small Business
Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=936594

Step 2:
=======
1. Open C:\windows\inf folder, find netrasa.inf file. Make a backup copy of
this files.
2. Open it and remove the entries under Excludefromselect=
3. Please update the Wan miniport driver from the device manager
4. Reboot the server and test the issue.

Step 3:
========
If the issue persists, let's do the following steps to uninstall all
ghosted com ports and ghosted modems:

1. Click Start/Run. In the open box, type CMD and click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after
each line

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd\<%SystemRoot%>\System32
start devmgmt.msc

Note: <%SystemRoot%> is referred to the folder in which SBS 2003 is
installed.

3. Go to Device Manager and check whether there is any ghosted com port or
ghosted modem installed on the computer. If so, please remove it.

Note: You must first select "show hidden devices" on the Device Manager
"View" menu before you can see devices that are no longer present in the
system.

4. Please test the issue again.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
create a new post to get further help.

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Thanks Terence,

I don't quiet agree with you thought. 1) I am using standard edition of
SBS 2003 R2, so there is no issues with ISA 2004. 2) I don't have any
ghost COM port & modem, the system is clean. 3) My feeling is the RRAS
conflict with some policy, cause everything happens.
