Hi,

We currently have a SBS2003 std server with 20 CALS.

We are planning to purchase a new server with SBS2003 PREMIUM edition so as
to setup Microsoft CRM 3.0

Would it affect performances, create issues if we have 2 servers LINKED up
which one is premium, the other is standard version. Would the Standard
version be able to enjoy the security application of the ISA and Microsoft
SQL as well?

thanks

Alan

Hi Alain,

it wouldn't work at all. RTFM :)

Only ONE SBS2003 Server per Network is allowed and will shutdown, if it find
another.

Hello Alan,

Looking through the hardware/software requirements for CRM 3.0 -
http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/crm/product/systemrequirements.mspx

It only seems to require base level server software no mention of needing
the items offered by SBS premium.

If this is your understanding then you can purchase a standard WINDOWS 2003
server for the CRM application, this will happily live in the same domain as
your current SBS server.

You may also be able to upgrade Standard to Premium if you just want to have
the ISA and SQL features on the network somewhere - perhaps someone else can
validate how this would be achieved.

Thanks

TT

The only 'linking' between the servers you'll be able to do is to match
usernames and passwords on each server - but users will still be prompted
when accessing resources on the SBS server which they were not authenticated
by. SBS servers do not support the concept of multiple domain controllers.
To simplify your installation (and administrative overhead) use a non
SBS-operating system on the second server. Then, setup this server as a
'member server' rather than a domain controller and join into your existing
domain. Member servers can be part of a Win SBS domain - as long as their
not a Domain Controller. Remember: SBS doesn't support the concept of
'domain trusts' or more than once Domain Controller per AD forest.

Cheers!

Hi,

the main purpose for a new server is that i think our current specs of
company server, will not be able to handle additional load created by the
CRM software, as we are pretty much near capactiy.

Our intention is to have sharepoint, exchange, file sharing hosted in
current SBS2003 std version.

Microsoft CRM in another server.

But these 2 servers need to be in the same domain and speaking to one
another.

Is this not possible with SBS2003 and i need to have windows server 2003
instead?

many thanks for your feedbacks

Alan

SBS can have additional member DC's, no problem. The biggest issue here
though is, that there can only be 1 SBS server in a network.

Thank guys,

In that case from my senario, would you think is a better option to upgrade
to a more powerful server?

We are currently using the following single core server:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630 - 3Ghz
1.5 GB ram
SATA harddisk raid

We may require to upgrade to a more powerful server if we want to use CRM on
the same server? any suggestions?

tks

Alan

Hi Alan,

You will need (assuming you are keeping the current server in the frame) to
add an additional Windows 2003 server to your existing infrastructure.

you can add as many windows 2003 servers to your domain as you like, they
can be either member servers or you can promote them to Domain controllers,

Another option if your current hardware is really getting past its sell by
date is to Migrate it to new higher capacity hardware.

If you would like to tell us your current Hardware setup we can ry and give
you other options maybe.

Thanks

Hi,

did you ever read the whole Article? Read this? :)

[..]
The computer that is running Microsoft CRM Server must also have access to
computers in the same Active Directory service domain that are running:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 and the latest updates or SQL
Server 2005
[..]

Source:
http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/crm/product/systemrequirements.mspx

So you have to either upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium (R2) with SQL-Server
installed OR have to buy SQL Server, but this would be the expensive way.

Hello Alan,

Which server do you have? is it Dual CPU capable?

How much storage do you currently have on the SATA Drives? can you add more?
or maybe use a NAS unit for storage?

Ram is fine, if Dual CPU then that will be fine

What other applications/services do you use this server for other than the
normal SBS services?

Only 20 users so Current CPU and RAM doesnt seem a major problem.

Hi Time traveller,

The server unfortunately is a single CPU.

Storage on SATA drive is about 50GB out of potentially 160GB on RAID 1

Apart from standard SBS2003 applications, we have symantec antivirus and
BulletFTP server (does SBS2003 have its own FTP server inbuilt?).

No other applications and services are installed apart from the above.

Not sure whether this constitute as a heavily used server in line with the
general public.

Our CPU usage is generally quite low, Stats i collected below:

Performance Counters Today Last Month Rate of Growth
Memory in use 1,602 MB 1,476 MB 9 %
Free disk space (C:) 101,997 MB 103,348 MB -1 %

Prob I see here is adding a server to host the CRM means that the
"chaching" goes up as he needs Windows and SQL and normal CRM.

With CRM SBE it can go on the SBS box.

Hi Alan,

Overall I am failing to see why you think the server is not up to the job.

It seems pretty underworked at the moment.

Where are your issues?

Thanks

Forgot.

SBS and all current flavours have FTP server capabilities, it is NOT
installed by default.

I would recommend against any form of FTP server that will be externally
accessable - too many loop holes on it.

Thanks
