I'm most of the way installing SP1for SBS 2003, and I am starting to get a
bit worried.
I read all the instructions on both the MS website and on smallbizserver.net
(many thanks to Mariette & Marina for putting such helpful documents
together), downloaded all 5 installation files, and set to it. Everything
seemed to be going well with the first 4 installations, but the problems
started with the SBS installation.
It started to install, and then after a few minutes it gave me an error
message first telling me that I had to have a network connection and then
that the installation hadn't completed successfully and I would have to run
it again. Well, as per the instructions on smallbizserver.net I had
unplugged my network cable after disabling the antivirus software, so I
figured that the SBS SP1 setup didn't like that and plugged the cable back
in. On running the SBS SP1 installation again I got the screen saying
'Please wait while setup inspects your current configuration and updates
your files', which took about 20 minutes for the progress bar to get to the
end. Once it had finished, it went back to the beginning. It's done this
about 4 or 5 times now.
Is this normal? If not, has it got stuck in a loop? If so, what can I do to
recover?
Many thanks
Adam
Which cable did you unplug?

SBS SP1 been looping through the install process for about 3 hours now, so
I'm pretty sure that something has gone horribly wrong.

OK, put the cable back in. This is not we meant with a one Nic setup. Just
disable internet access on your router and rerun setup.
Sorry, I will update our document on this issue
--
Mariëtte Knap
Many thanks, Mariette.
I already put the cable back in before my current attempt to re-run setup.
It has been doing its looping with the cable in all the time. The internet
router has been switched on all that time: does that make a difference, or
was that just to protect me from nasties while my antivirus is disabled?
Presumably I am going to have to do something fairly drastic to stop the
setup looping at this stage, such as stopping it with Task Manager (if it
will let me) or switching off the power. Or is there anything else I can do?
Should I try running setup again once I have got out of the current one? And
what do I do if it just starts looping again?
This is all getting a bit worrying.
Adam
OK, we have a new development. After looping for about 4 hours, it finally
got bored and decided to stop. It gave me an error message telling me that
it had 'encountered an error' and asked me if I wanted to view the log for
more information. The log didn't contain any error messages, it just told me
that everything had been installed successfully.
The computer has now restarted and appears to be OK. The question is, how
can I tell whether I installed the update successfully or not?
Many thanks

Be sure you have a backup! Yes, kill the process and reboot the server. If
disaster strikes and you can't boot you need to do a disaster restore but I
do not expect this to happen.

There is something wrong. Please have a look at all log files in:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\Logs
and report back what you have found. Please, post only the part with errors
and the name of the log file.
I found this in the file 'errorlog.txt' in the location you specified:

Any ideas?
Adam
> I found this in the file 'errorlog.txt' in the location you specified:
All those errors are related to the fact that you unplugged the network
cable. What you see in the log is that it could not contact a domain
controller. SBS acts really weird when the Lan nic does not have a device
connected to it like a hub, switch or router. I would just run it again
because parts of it were not installed. I do not expect problems.
What you should do is check the event logs for errors after a clean boot. I
assume the last boot went without problems?
BTW, I have removed the line in our document where you were told to unplug
the network cable. I am very sorry about this. I will contact the person who
wrote this part.

Mariėtte Knap
No need to apologise. It's very good of you to make the information
available in the first place, and I am more than happy to forgive the
occasional part of it that may have been less than 100% clear. No, the
person who really needs to apologise is whichever idiot at Microsoft wrote
software that would break so easily in the face of something as simple as an
unplugged network cable and then somehow thought it acceptable not to put in
a couple of extra lines of code at the start of the setup program to check
to see whether the network cable was in fact plugged in. Do they employ
trained programmers to write these service packs or do they try to save
money by getting people on some kind of young offender rehabilitation scheme
to do the programming?
Anyway, enough ranting.
I ran the setup again, and this time it gave me a rather pleasing message at
the end telling me that it had completed successfully. (I don't know how
long it took this time as I just left it to do its stuff last night and went
home, and came back to check on it this morning.) But being the suspicious
soul that I am, I checked the error log again (errorlog.txt in the same
location as last time), and there were rather a lot of entries there,
reproduced below:
