I'm new in this SBS server backup/restore process and was doing some
tests to make sure my backup will work in case of any disaster.
So here is what I do,
Create a full backup with ntbackup utility using ASR and creating
floppy, backing up to an external hdd.
then shutdown the server and hook up two new hdd, bigger sizes then
the original ones, and boot from SBS cd and select F2 during the
installation to go to ASR setup and recover everything from the
external hdd.
Then boot up the server and log in as an administrator. Up to this
point everything looks normal but log-in process takes like 10-12
minutes. Also clients' log-in take 10-12 minutes, and everything goes
extremely slow.
I restarted the server again and see if something changes, but
nothing. I cannot even access to the services, event viewer or anything
else due to slowness after the restore.
I also tried individual backup, like only system state and data
separately and tried to restore only system state first, but still the
same slowness. I'm guessing there is something wrong with the system
state backup.
What would you suggest?
What other options do I have to make sure if something goes wrong I
can restore the system and make the server up and running?
Thanks in advance.
Atilla
Any help here?

the usual procedure is to install the Windows part of SBS, then restore the
backup. This procedure assumes you have a viable backup of the critical
components, which are probably best gotten through the SBS Backup Wiz part
of the System Management Console.

Thank you for posting here. And thanks for Larry's inputs
From the post, I understand that you backup SBS and restore the system to a
new hard disk, then the new restored SBS is very slow.
I think this problem may be a little complex performance issue and our
troubleshooting maybe time-consuming. So if you would like to call CSS for
assistance, I would be appreciate and think it is a more effective ways. To
obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look
at the web site listed below.

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for

Additional, I suggest you perform the following recommended document to do
the SBS backup and restore:

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for your advise about the document, actually i should have
said, i did all the instructions on the document and read it over and
over. When I was restoring I had a print out of this document front of
me all the time.
Thanks for your time and your input.
Hi Terrence,
And you are right about the hard disk, I'm also planning to increase
hard disk space on the system while i'm doing the restore. But i do
create a the same partition size on the new hard disk for the ASR, as
its recommended on the SBS documents.
I read both documents and I did try so many different way to do the
restore.
Would you be able to tell me about the call details, like, i'm in
Toronto/Canada, is it the same number 1-800 MICROSOFT ? It just wasnt
clear on the page, and also I'm a new IT person in this company and
nobody has any idea if they have called before or not and if there is
free call option for SBS.
in the mean time my manager suggests me that its costing too much to
do these trials (i have done 3 so far) and he is now considering
having another server on the network for at least and AD backup. but
the rest can be restored from the backup if its just a data. Would
this be possible, as far as i read some documents having another W2003
Server as a child domain isnt possible. What is the other
possibilities?
Thanks for your time and input.

Thank you for your reply.
I still suggest you to call our CSS for help.
