Hello all, I am setting up a small Windows 2003 SBS for a client and
have a email question. The client uses a external email server for
emails (comcast.net) with multiple mailboxes also through comcast.net.
They do not want to change their email addresses since their email names
are so widely used. To support with this I setup the pop3 connector for
exchange which retrieves each individual comcast.net mailbox and
deposits it to the correct exchange user mailbox. This works ok, however
they cannot send out or respond from their outlook inbox to the
internet. When installing the server I accepted the standard .local
naming of the server and they do not have any registered records (Mx or
A) anywhere for their email or company. How do I set outbound (smtp)
email to use the clients various comcast accounts? Or more importantly
to just use comcast.net for outbound email and appear to come from their
comcast.net accounts too. Is it just as easy as going into the SMTP
connector-advanced tab-outbound security and put in the user name and
password for the isp account? Also can I just change the SMTP email
address in AD to reflect the above comcast.net address rather that what
the server created by default?

Thanks in advance for any words of guidance.

Doug

Hi Doug:
If you look in each user's email account list you will see all the
addressess that Exchange will deliver mail in from to this client. One of the
email addresses will be of type SMTP and will be bold (i.e. marked as the
default). That is the address that will be used to send email out from for
that user. You can choose what that SMTP address will be and that will then
be used for all emails sent out by that user.

I hope that goes some way towards addressing the question. If not, clarify
your question

Godfrey, Thanks for that but is only half the problem. Where do I tell
exchange to use the external isp for all outbound smtp traffic? In this
case comcast.net will be the pop3 and smtp server for the office. Is it
just setting a smtp smart host for comcast.net?

Thanks.

Doug--

The email account list will be in each user's Outlook (on the client
computer) under Tools-->Services/E-Mail Accounts.

I played with a similar situtation in a test environment a while back for
Verizon.net email. I believe this is what I did (bear with me, this is
going mostly from memory)...

1. Run CEICW and use comcast.net as the FQDN for the client's email domain.

2. Set up an SMTP connector (call it: Foward to Comcast) as a smarthost to
forward all mail to the Comcast SMTP server (smtp.comcast.net). Follow the
instructions at the link below to set up the smarthost (see the section:
Smarthost for specific domains but instead of making it for specific
domains, in the Address Space, use SMTP * 1, so that all outgoing mail
is forwarded through this new "Forward to Comcast" SMTP Connector). In the
connector properties, under the Advanced tab | Outbound Security, enter the
username and password for their main Comcast account. This will
authenticate to the Comcast SMTP server so that mail can be sent through
Comcast without them barking about "Error 550: relay not allow".
http://www.sbslinks.com/DNS_Smarthost.htm

3. Server Management | Advanced Management | yourdomain (Exchange) |
Servers | SBS Server | Protocols | SMTP | rclick Default SMTP Virtual Server
| Properties | Messages | Forward all mail with unresolved recipients to
host:

Type in : smtp.comcast.net

4. Go into each user's email address: Server Management | Users |
(doubleclick a user in the right pane) | Email Addresses tab | click on
the bolded SMTP address | Edit, and type in the correct Comcast.net address
for that user.

5. Again on the Email Addresses tab, uncheck "Automatically update email
addresses based on recipient policy" and then click OK. If you don't do
this, each time you run CEICW in the future, the SMTP email address will be
changed back to SBSus...@comcast.net which will probably be wrong since I
suspect you didn't create their SBS usernames based on their Comcast email
address names.

I believe that should do it. This should allow them to send all outgoing
mail using Comcast as a smarthost. It should also allow them to send mail
(per step 3) to anyone else outside your SBS network with an "@comcast.net"
email address.

Hope this helps.
