Hi,
I am trying to setup a xp pro to a SBS network. When i try to use
the ConnectComputer add a computer to the network and i get the
following error message: " An error occured when configuring
networking settings. See your network administrator. "

I looked at the sbsnetsetup.log file and it says: "
FinishNetworkingSetup() -- NetJoinDomain() failed [1753], returning
FinishNetworkingSetup() failed -- hr == [-2147467259]
Deleted sbsmig out of runonce key.
"

Any clue on fixing it. Thanks

stephenk

Hi stephenk,

Thanks for posting here.

From the description, I understand the issue is that you cannot use
connectcomputer wizard to add your client workstation to the SBS domain. If
I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Let us refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1.I would like to check the following things first.

On SBS server:

External NIC:
IP: assigned by your ISP or your hardware router
Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

Internal NIC:
IP: Fixed IP
Gateway: None
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

On workstation:

IP: Assigned by DHCP on SBS
Gateway: SBS internal NIC IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

After that, please confirm that you could ping the SBS server netbios name,
DNS domain name fine.

2.If the problem persists, please open the DNS console on the SBS server.
Please confirm _msdcs.domain.local zone is in the DNS forward lookup zone.

By default, SBS DNS Forward Lookup zone contains _msdcs.domain.local and
domain.local. Recreate the _msdcs.domain.local zone if it is missing:

1. Right-click Forward Lookup Zones in DNS and select New Zone.
2. Specify Primary Zone, and use _msdcs.domain.local as the Zone name.
3. Stop Netlogon and DNS service.
4. Rename %windir%\system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb
5. Start Netlogon and DNS service
6. ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns
7. Close and reopen the DNS snap-in.
8. Verify _msdcs.domain.local contains dc, domains, gc, and pdc.

3.Please re-run the CEICW, go through all the steps in the wizard to
configure your SBS network and IIS as well. Reference:

2003

4.go to SBS server,Enable File and Printer sharing on the LAN, disable it
on the WAN

5.Meanwhile, you may try the following steps on the client workstation and
see how it goes:
Try deleting one computer and create a new user account and recreate the
computer object to see if that account can be use connectcomputer then.

a. Log on locally as a local administrator to the client. In Control Panel,
double-click System. On the Computer Name tab, click Change, select
Workgroup, type a workgroup name and click OK. Click OK when prompted to
restart the computer.

b. On the SBS server, delete the user and computer accounts, click Add a
User in Server Management\Users. Follow the instructions to create user and
computer accounts.

c. On the client, open IE, go to http://SBSServerName/connectcomputer and
follow the instructions to join domain.

6.rename the xp box to the name of the account on the sbs server
first--rebooting then running the connectcomputer wizard again

7.If the issue persists, you may try the steps below to manually join
domain:

a. Log on local as a local administrator to the client, add the domain user
to the local Administrators group.

b. In Control Panel, double-click System. On the Computer Name tab, click
Change, select Domain, type your domain name and click OK. You'll be
prompted to enter the domain admin's credential. Enter the credential,
click OK, wait a while and you'll see a dialog box with the message
"Welcome to the xxx domain". Restart the computer as prompted.

c. Log on as the domain user.

ConnectComputer virtual directory.

to do so:

cd3:\SBS\ClientSetup\ClientSetup to the C:\Inetpub\ConnectComputer
directory. Make sure to remove the "Read-only" attributes from the files.

F. In the Alias field, type in ConnectComputer and click Next.

II.If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect the following
information for further analysis:

1.Please run "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" (Without the quotation marks)
on the command prompt on the SBS Server and the specific workstation, and
then send these files to me.

2.On the SBS Server, can you access this webpage by using
http://localhost/connectcomputer or http://SBSServerName/connectcomputer
link?

3.Send SBSNetSetup.log from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small
Business Server\Clients at the problematic client workstation to me

4.Send NetSetup.log from %windir%\debug at the problematic client
workstation to me.

5.Does the problem only occur when trying to get this particular computer
to the domain? Can it be reproduced on every client computer?

I appreciate your time. I am happy to be of assistance and look forward to
your reply.

Have a nice day!
