Should be simple, I'm hoping. I would have swore that I read somewhere that
the Windows XP Tablet PC could be joined to the SBS domains. I can't find
where I read that now. Am I incorrect?

I have a brand new out of the box HP Tablet PC. I created the account for
it and successfully ran the network installation wizard from
http://servername/connectcomputer. It rebooted, sbs_netsetup did its thing
just fine and now I can't login using any accounts. The SBS server is setup
as the DHCP and DNS server. The machine, if I login locally, can
successfully release/renew IP addresses, ping the gateway, ping the server by
name and address. SBS_Netsetup successfully changed the name of the tablet
pc to match the account that was created for it on the server. It
successfully changed it to the correct domain as well. In server management
though, there is no operating system listed next to the tablet pc's name,
like there should be after running setup.

The error I get when I try logging into a domain account is:

"Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller
is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not
found. Please try again later."

Thanks in advance.

Hello Lincoln,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you cannot log in the SBS 2K3 Domain. If I have
misunderstood your issue, please let me know.

Before we go any further, may I know what exact Operating System is running
on the Windows XP Tablet PC, please?

In SBS 2003, we do not support Windows XP Home Edition clients since they
cannot be joined into the domain and therefore cannot be managed centrally.
They also cannot utilize also most all the SBS 2003 and domain features. We
recommend customers upgrade to Windows XP Professional Edition and join it
to the domain.

Based on the research of the error message you have provided, there are
various factors can cause this issue.

1> Is there any firewall or anti-virus software installed on the
workstation? Based on my research, F-Secure anti-virus software can cause
this issue:

831348 "Windows cannot connect to the domain" error message when you try to
log
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831348

2> The issue also can be caused if the secure channel is lost. You can
either rejoin the Windows XP Tablet PC into domain or reset the secure
channel:

When a computer is joined into the domain, the domain controller uses a
secure channel to encrypt the domain traffic between the workstation and
the server. A password is generated for this secure communication. If the
password cannot be synchronized between the client and the server, the
secure channel would be corrupted. Thus, users would encounter logon and
other access issues. Rejoin the computer into the domain should rebuild the
secure channel.

>> To remove the Windows XP Tablet PC from Domain and rejoin it into
domain:

a. In client computer, right-click My Computer and then select Properties.
b. In Computer Name tab, click Change and the change the computer from
Domain to Workgroup.
c. Log off and log on using its local administrator account
d. In client computer, open IE and run http://servername/connectcomputer
e. Follow the wizard to finish.

>> To reset the secure channel, you can use the netdom command to reset the
secure channel. For the detailed information:

netdom reset <machinename> /domain:<domainname>

NOTE: Replace <machinename> and <domainname> with the real Windows XP
computer name and domain name.

For more detailed steps, please see KB216393:

216393 Resetting computer accounts in Windows 2000 and Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216393

3> I also suggest that you have a look at following KB articles. If you
meet the exact symptom, please apply the steps:

810977 Event ID 5722 is logged on your Windows 2000 Server-based domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810977

244474 How to Force Kerberos to Use TCP Instead of UDP

823659 Client, service, and program incompatibilities that may occur when
you modify security settings and user rights assignments
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;823659

=========

If the issue persists after you perform all the steps above, please help me
to gather further information for research:

a. Please log in the problematic computer (Windows XP Tablet PC) as local
administrator account, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check
whether there are any errors in Application and System. If yes, double
click it, click the Copy button and paste the full content to the
Newsgroup.

b. Please ask a good client to log on the problematic computer (Windows XP
Tablet PC), will this issue occur?

Please take your time to perform the steps and gather the information for
research. If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know. I am
looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/evaluation/features.mspx

As per this article: "Has full capabilities of Windows XP Professional".

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition tablets join domains just fine. The fact that
ConnectComputer ran on it confirms this.

For other details, Brandy provided specific suggestions.

My hp 1100 Tablet PC does this when I cold boot using the wireless
connection. The wireless part of the drivers do not seem to become totally
activated until after you are logged on to the Tablet PC. You will be joined
to the domain, but after the error has been written to the event log. You
can test this by clearing the event log and then logging off and back on to
the domain. This time you should not see the errors as the wireless
connection was never deactivated in this process.

This only happens when using the wireless connection. The hardwired 10/100
connection works fine and probably should be used for the initial
configuration.

This may not be the same as your problem, but it may help.

but, a specific manufacturer can curtail capabilities.

'ccording to microsoft, windows mobile 5.0 supports the bluetooth headset
profile

talk to any dell axim owner runing 5.0, and the profile is not possible.

the fact that microsoft & the OS supports a feature, does not mean an
individual manufacturers implememntation
of a OS will support a feature (sadly)

Thank you guys. I will try out your recommendations and gather more
information if they do not get this tablet pc up and running when I go out to
the client site latter this morning. In either case I'll post back and let
you know the results.

All Tablet PCs are domain joinable.

I don't doubt it.

My point was, a sweeping statement by microsoft about it's OS, does not
automatically mean
it's still the case when it gets down to an individual manufacturers
implementation.

MDBJ,

That would only be the case with:
Windows XP Embedded
Windows CE-based systems (such as Windows Mobile)

This would not be the case with any other edition of Windows XP. OEMs can
slightly customize the OS, but they cannot remove core features. That would
be against our agreement.

Thank you all for your help. Everything was set correctly on the server and
client machines so with out your help I would've been clueless. Sorry it
took me a day to get back to you. The Tablet PC was not available yesterday.

Brandy, as is usual with items I've seen you post, you hit the nail on the
head. For some reason the secure channel you mentioned that gets generated
by the server for the client machine to use to authenticate to the server had
been corrupted. The day I posted the original question, I had recreated the
computer account and rejoined the tablet pc several times. However,
yesterday the client had me replace a router for a better model he had
recently purchased (for a seperate reason). Consequently, I tried recreating
the tablet pc's account on the server today and ran through the setup one
more time and it not only completed successfully but we were able to login
after SBS_netsetup completed. Which was not the case before.

The only thing that was different, was the router had been replaced that
both the server and tablet pc were plugged into. I would deduce, that the
source of the client and server being unable to synchronize their
communication would be related to the router that was replaced yesterday.

Thanks again for your help.
