When you loaded the OS (before the restore), did you bring it back up to the
same Windows 2003 service pack it was originally at before the crash?

Yes, I think it might Andrea.  The restore doc (link) that you quoted
appears to be incomplete (or an older version of the current backup
document).  Try this one:
