Reinstalling sbs 2003
John
I need to trash existing sbs 2003 on the dell server and reinstall sbs 2003.
I have a few questions.
1. Server disks are windows 2x RAID1 and data 4x RAID5. How can I just wipe
out windows disk and not data disk? Is it possible when installing via Dell
Server Management?
2. I'll backup the windows and data disks via ntbackup but is there a way to
make a separate backup of below for easy record and manual recreation later;
Usernames, Emails
Shares & Rights
Printers
3. When reconnecting the client pcs, can I tell 'connect to computer' wizard
to use the old profile of the user on the pc?

No, probably not. That's the pain of most recovery solutions. If there's a
workaround, you'll need to get it from Dell, since they created the disks.

Certainly, lots of solutions here. From the simple to the complex. The
simplest is to simply print out screen shots or echo lists to a text file.

No. The old profiles are domain profiles and the wizard only imports
workgroup profiles.
It's unclear to me why you're trashing the existing installation, but if
you're this concerned about preserving its configuration and settings, then
I think what you really need to do is a Swing Migration.

Assuming the RAID1 is just OS then yes you could.
However I wouldn't do it this way.
Because of all the Linking from the OS to the DATA drives
SBSmigration would be your easiest way to re install it.

Charlie they will Wipe only the CD you are installing the OS on
So in His Case it would Wipe the RAID1 and leave the Data CD's alone.
Unless they have drastically changed the Install
If you remember the Dell Install Grabs the Set you want to install the OS
it formats it and then Installs just the os it.
(And the Other Partition is Blank
After your server boots and loads the drivers it will see the other RAID
Set.
However your drive letters will be messed up because of the seeing the RAID5
Set before the Second Half of the RAID1 Set
Then you have to Play around and set everything up to work.
However I WOULD NOT DO THIS! Because of all the other links
I'd assume all data on the RAID5 Set needs to be backed up and restored.
Even though I've done this and it works on my system Dell PE1800
Doesn't mean it will work for him. and it's kind of a pain.

I don't buy Dell servers, so my memory of how they do their installer is
rather dated. The last time I worked with a Dell server was Exchange 5.5
time frame. It was a disaster of a server that I inherited when I took over
as IT Director at a startup I worked at for a couple of years.

The short answer is that before starting this project, consider
very seriously a Swing Migration. You can swing back onto the same hardware;
I've done this twice. It's a little trickier than a swing onto different
hardware (mainly on account of the difficulty of preserving operations), so
seriously consider purchasing new hardware at this time if it may be needed
within the next year or so.
On a fairly simple SBS network of one server and four
workstations, I did a swing back to the same hardware in two days. I was
able to get the client to agree to two days of downtime, so that made it
easier as I didn't have to maintain operations. If a temporary server is
required, that makes it harder. But if the domain itself (Active Directory)
is sound, then a Swing Migration is the way to go. If Active Directory
itself is not sound (for example, a domain name of just plain "domain" with
no .something), then a Swing may not be worthwhile because the domain itself
is what would need to be fixed by redoing it from scratch.
