So my questions are, will there be a log of errors
somewhere that indicates why the upgrade failed? If not,
how does one determine why the upgrade failed?

Chris

Thank you for your post.
The questions that Brian Desmond (MVP) asked are important for us to
troubleshoot this kind of upgrade issue. If possible, please use a digital
camera to take a photo on the installation page and post it here.
I would like to share my experience in handling this kind of problem with
you:
1. If you have performed backup before the upgrade, please restore it and
then check upgrade compatibility. You can insert the Windows Server 2003
Installation CD and choose "Check system compatibility" (or run
"<CD_ROM>\i386\winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly") to verify if the upgrade is
available.
2. Temporarily unplug all the add-on PCI cards (for example, sound card,
network adapter, internal modem) and peripheral devices (for example,
printer, USB devices), and then try the upgrade again.
3. When the problem occurs, we can press Shift+F11 to display a window
showing the status of the installation. This lets us know what component is
being installed.
4. We can then press down Shift+F10 to open a command prompt, browse to the
%windir% folder, and check the following files:
Setuperr.log, Setupact.log, Setupapi.log, Setuplog.txt and Pnplog.txt
From the information collected in Step 2~4, we can get more hints and then
perform more specific troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.
Thank you for using our news group!

Thank you for your response.
The server in question is a HP LH 3, a single Pen III 500
CPU, 256 mb, 5 GB of free disk space on the primary
partition. It is PDC NT 4 service packed and windows
updated up to 28DEC03.
I ran the "Check system compatibility", which downloaded
latest setup information, until I was only getting three
errors. These were, Exchange 5.5, HP Laserjet 5M and one
about Windows 95 and NT4 compatiblility. Exchange was only
an Administration install, I uninstalled this but it still
comes up as an error. I would think the Laserjet 5M would
only cause a problem if I tried to setup a printer using
that driver. Of course Win 95 and NT4 issues should not
stop the install.
Pressing Shift+F11 I see that the upgrade is stalling
on "Installing Components" the status reads: "Setting
COM+System Application as system".
Pressing Shift+F10 I have accessed Setuperr.log, the error
is repeats as follows;
"
Warning:
An error occurred when trying to add the account Network
Service to the group Performance Log users
The problem, "The specified local group deos not exist.",
occurred when trying to open the group. Pleasse add the
member manually.
"
Pressing Shift+F10, Setupact.log has the same error as
above but further along (after the copy type information)
it has this error:
"
esk.cpl: DeskInstallService: SetupDiGetSelectedDriver
failed with error 0xe000203.

"
UI mode Setup has started
An error occurred when trying to add the account Network
Service to the group Performance Log users

"
Pressing Shift+F10 I have accessed Setupapi.log, the
following errors appears:
"

There seems to be a lot of these types of error that
finish with success?
I am going to have a guess and say it is the inbuilt
graphic card that is giving me problems. What I'll do is
put PCI card in and see if it will upgrade with that.
Thanks for your help

Chris

I have replace the graphic card but the upgrades stalls at;
Install Windows - completing Installation - 23 minutes to
go.
Shift+F11 shows me that it is hanging on:
Setting COM+System Application as system.
Brian, I think as long the server thinks it is a PDC, the
upgrade should be able to go ahead without a NIC, of
course I could be wrong.

Thank you for your update.
First, thanks Brain for his reminder. He is right, please do not disable
the NIC since it is a domain controller. I apologize for my typo.
Regarding the information you provided, I would like to suggest that we try
to resolve the problem in the following way:
1. Please uninstall the "HP Laserjet 5M" and then try the upgrade
installation again. If the installation process stops at configuring COM+
components, we can skip it by using the following method:
1.) Press SHIFT+F10 to get to a command prompt.
2.) Type in "taskmgr" to get Task Manager up.
3.) End the dllhost.exe process.
The setup should continue. (If a warning error message appears, please
click OK to ignore it.)
2. If the problem persists, please replace the PCI Graphic Card (we should
disable the old card in the BIOS) first.
Please let us know how the steps work out.
Thank you and happy new year!

It would appear that by using Task Manager to end
dllhost.exe, I was able to pass the install phase of the
Windows 2003 upgrade.
For the record I remove the PCI graphics card and managed
to complete the install using the inbuild graphic card. It
would seem a Hewlett Packard LH3 can work with Windows
2003 although I have errors but I will check this forum
before asking for help.
Thank you and Brain for your help.

Chris

Did you get any problem when running "winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly"
command?
I recommend that you copy a msconfig.exe tool from Windows XP computer to
this box, and run it to disable all the Startup Group and third party
services. Then try to upgrade again.
If the problem still persists, please attach the Setupapi.log and system
information file in your post. We will do further research.
Thank you,
Bob Qin
