Hello, I recently had a 2008 SBE server die a horrid death... system locked
up and found 1 of the disks was not working, and the raid controller failed
to trip over and start a repair, did that manually, well.. that's when the
hot spare died... yea... :( so after hours of trying to get the array back
up and going.. I was informed by intel that the built in raid controller on
my S5000VSA board w/ the AXXRAKSW5 activation key, was a "software" based
RAID controller and did not have the features needed to fix the array..

Long story short.. I'm reinstalling the server and resetting everything up..
I'm wondering if when I go around and re-add people's PCs to the domain, if
I have users and passwords the same, will I need to reset up everyone's
profiles? (IE copy their desktops, fav's, and emails) or will the PC use the
same profile as the old domain?

Hello Drew,

If the domain is rebuild complete from zero, even if using the same domain
name, all preconfigured user/computer/group accounts are using different
SIDs.

So all of them have to be rebuild and the computers must be joined to the
new domain.

All local computer profiles will then become inaccessible for them and new
ones are created. A local administrator will be able to access them and copy
needed data to the new one or the user should save there data to external
drives.

Best regards

can I cheat and rename the old profile(s), log in and have it make the
profile, and then reboot the pc, and log in as an admin and rename the old
profile back??

IE
old user name "billing" old profile "C:\Documents and settings\Billing"
rename that to billing-1 logged in as an administrator, log in, and have it
make the new "C:\Documents and settings\Billing" profile, reboot, log in as
an admin and rename the new billing to billing-2 and rename the old
billing-1 back to billing? will that work?

Hello Drew,

If you logon with the new created account in domain new, the profile will
be shown as billing.newdomain instead the exisiting one billing. If you rename
billing to billingold you should be able to see the folder billing again.
But this still requires a new setup of all desktop settings etc.

As said before you can copy the needed data between the profiles as administrator
but just renaming wouldn't grant access to the old folder data as far as
i know. Try it out on a test machine.

If you log in as administrator you should be able to go to system
properties, advanced, user profiles, and use the Copy button to allow
the new user to use the old profile. this will only work if the new
user has not yet logged on, otherwise you will have to copy the
profile elements to the new profile, or start from fresh.

Please be aware that it becomes easy to get confused, so make backups
if you are deleting profiles.
