Stale records

We have many 2003 Domain Controller with AD integrated DNS.

The Microsoft DNS is a dynamic DNS in the sense that records are added and
deleted automatically by the clients or by DHCP; our problem is that the
records deleting doesn’t work very well and a counsaltant told us that it is
a Microsoft’s DNS bug.
We have setup the scaneging at 8 days but we have many records (hundreds)
that are more than one year old.
Since we have more than 4000 computers deleting the stale records manually
is to much work for us.

I am thinking that the a way to solve the problem of stale records could be
deleting all the records from time to time (e.g. once a year) and wait until
the DNS is dynamically repopulated; but the little side effect is that while
the DNS will be populated (and it can take some days) some services will not
work and we can't afford it.

Since we have a WINS infrastructure too I was thinking that the wins
infrastructure could backup the DNS infrastructure while the DNS will be
populated.

Does this make sense or there are problems that I don't see?

You can force the dns server to age out all records and scavenge them, I
would avoid doing a wholesale delete. What I have experienced most records
in dns that are a problem usually relate back to the reverse pointer and not
the host name themselves.

aging/scavenging is the best way to go. I recently went though a dns
migration project replacing our old incognito server with msdns, and I've
been aging/scavenging our records and it's actually working quite
nicely(much to my surprise) :)
