Dear all,

I do not have experience with MSI installations so let me first
describe the problem.

There was a program that was installed on ca. 50 laptops using a
SETUP.EXE program. Now we have received an update to this program in
the form of the updated application EXE file (not the instalation
package - neither SETUP.EXE nor MSI - but just a new version of
application EXE file).

Now I have to install it on all laptops.

My first thought was to use Active Directory Software Installation
feature, but this feature operates only on MSI packeges. So now comes
my questions:
1) What would be the simplest way of updating those 50 laptops (please
note that people with those laptops connect to our HQ network now and
then, but basically work offline)?
2) If the solution is to use Active Directory Software Installation,
what would be the simplest way of creating an MSI package that would
replace the old EXE file? No questions asked, no uninstall features,
just copy one EXE file to Program Files\Company\Product location.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Marlin

Ask the vendor who is supplying the updated application executable for a
proper patch package instead. You won't be the only customer who needs
either a MSP package or an updated MSI package for proper deployment.

Do not consider a solution that involves creating a whole MSI package just
to deploy this updated file. It might work but it will not last and will
cause issues when you get future updates from the original vendor.

Dear Adrian,

Basically you are right, but the problem with the update was that it
was a one-off, customer-specific updade, prepared only for our
company.
Requiring a whole MSI package would generate additional costs.

If there is no better way, I will be just copying the EXE file to
users' laptops over the network, but I thought the process could be
somehow automated.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Marlin
