Cannot turn off @#$#!!! Sounds

I have tried several times to turn off the stupid event sounds in WinXP MCE. Every time I go thru turning off the sounds the verdammt software turns them back on. Short of switching to Linux, what can be done?

Currently I am getting "Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media Center" error while opening MCE. I can run DVDs or Video via Windows Media Player without any issues but not MCE. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with Media Center on a 32 bit computer and a Hauppauge TV MCE compatible card. I am able to configure the tuner for my satellite provider and watch TV shows. I'm the only user of my laptop which I purchased new, and I've set myself as a user with admin priveleges. Now I need to log on as the administrator but I've forgotten the password. I just got my computer back from having a virus removed. Now I cannot get all the speakers to work (I have a 5.1 system); only two speakers work. I've checked the connections several times and everything is how it was before. Am I missing something simple?
