I have a Zoom adls switch router model 5590 connected wirelessly to the xbox
360, I can connect to XBOX live using the xbox 360, but when trying to
install the media connect and the software from www.xbox.com/pcsetup i manage
to get to the point where the install asks for a unique id, which I enter
(gained from the xbox 360 setup) The install does not manage to find my xbox
360 on the network, I found th elink to the support site, and configured my
symantec firewall exactly as required, but still getting the same issue.

Does anyone know what else I can try ? I am thinking it may be related to
the firewall on the router ?

Windows 2005 RU2, correct?
PC is not connected to a domain?
Windows AntiSpyware installed?
Windows "Fast User Switching" enabled?
Wireless speed of the 5590?

Keep it simple,
Disable Windows XP SP2 firewall
Disable Symantec Firewall
Connect XBOX360 via wire and see it completes, is so, move on to wireless?

If Microsoft Anti-Spyware is installed, it's real time scanning module will
interfere with Extenders.

You'd need to upgrade to Microsoft's Windows Defender to get around that.

Does your cable modem by change have a setting to disble "Browse network"?

I have noticed that newer wireless access points have the ability to keep
the wireless traffic seperate from the wired network. A form of security.

Check your wireless access point for something along those lines.

If so, disable it or open the ports that the XBOX uses to talk to the PC.

Another recommendation is to connect the Xbox 360 directly to the Media
Center PC to narrow down if the issue is cause by the router or
configuration on the PC. This cable does not have to be a cross over cable
as the Xbox 360 is able to switch network modes and connect to the PC.

There is nop option to disable "browse network on the router"

and It will be difficult to connect the xbox 360 directly to my windows
media centre PC as they are on different floors in my house.

Can you temporarily relocate your Xbox so that you can directly connect it
to your PC? Without definitively narrowing this down to a network issue,
attempting to solve the issue is much harder.

Thanks for your response I have a few questions.

How would connect the xbox 360 directly to my PC, I may be able to relocate
it, but will need to know what cables to use ?

When you state "connect the xbox 360 to my pc directly what do you mean ?

do I connect the xbox 360 to my pc using an ethernet cable connecting to my
nic card, or

do I connect the xboxb 360 to my wirelss router using an ethernet cable ?

thanks

To connect the XBox 360 directly to the PC, you would need an open ethernet connection (NIC card) on the PC and a "cross over" CAT5 cable to use between the XBox 360 and the PC. Connecting your 360 directly to a wired port on the router is an option, and would use a standard CAT5 cable.

It doesn't have to be a crossover cable.

The port on the Xbox 360 is an Auto-MDIX socket, meaning it will
automatically sense what sort of cable it has connected to it, and switches
into the correct mode to work with the other end of the link.
