I'm planning on building a new computer soon.

Will I have to install Service Pack 2 after installing Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005? Or is Service Pack 2 already built into Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005 since it's such a new release?

MCE 2005 already includes Service Pack 2.

To confirm that service pack 2 is installed, goto Start, Run and type
'winver'
The second line should end with "Service Pack 2"

Hi,

This was a reply to the above question.

Unfortunately is is not quite true. In my current new installation of XP
MCE 2005 it says is requires files from SP2 halfway through the installation
on an ASUS barebones PC. If the SP 2 disk is inserted then the system
crashes. I have been told that the files are available on the XP disk 1
installation and if this disk is inserted then the installation completes.

Can you confirm this and let me know if Microsoft are planning a fix for
this ?

SP2 is included in the MCE disk.

After starting the install with the first disk, the setup will ask for the
2nd disk (w/ the one with the MCE content), then it will ask for "XP w/
SP2", that means it wants the first MCE setup disk again. It does not mean
to put a separate "SP2" disk in the drive. You only use the 2 disks that
came with the OEM coppy of MCE, don't use some other disk you happen to have
lying around and it will install fine.

BTW, this disk swap discussion occurrs regularly on this newsgroup, it's
always good to search, read, and learn from other past experiences.

If you have the Windows XP MCE2005 discs, disc 1 is SP2.

If you install MCE2005, SP2 will be included. If you start mixing and
matching discs that are not included in the MCE2005 install set, you will
have a botched install.

Thank you very much for both of your replies.

I will re-attempt the install as you have suggested using disk 1 when it
asks for SP2.

When I queried this with the computer supplier he said that Microsoft had
acknowledged an error in the install which occurs on some systems and the
remedy was to insert XP professional Disk 1.

I did try to look for this topic on this XP MCE forum but could not find it.

Best regards

Graham

Big Thanks

The tip of re-inserting CD1 of MCE 2005 worked and I now have a clean and
completely different lookingh install.

Just to be clear the message asks for Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
disk to be re-inserted (no mention of disk 1 of MCE).

MCE 2005 Disc 1 is Windows XP Profesional SP2.
Difference is that you put in a MCE key, which calls different bits of the
install (insertion of MCE2005 Disc 2)
