After a recent update not sure which one.....i came back to use Media Centre
and now when i play a track the album art displays as a black box. All my
album art in My Music folders are the right album art Folder.jpg and each mp3
as the associated jpg embedded inside. Ive been used media center this way
for ages and its worked perfectly until now.

Strange

Thanks

Try this (I'm doing this from memory) - In Windows Explorer, go to the album
folder, right click Properties-Customize-Choose Picture, select the
Folder.jpg file, and then click Apply or OK. Reinvoke My Music in MCE and
test. I have found that even if they show OK in Explorer thumbnails, MCE can
somehow lose the setting. The reapplication of the setting in Explorer
usually solves the problem. I will say the problem I see is simply no art
and a blue blank template for my album cover. I don't think I've had a black
box issue.

Sorry tried that on a few albums and still didnt work. Its really
frustrating cus thats my main use of media center. (my mp3 collection)
Without the album art displayed it seems to lack something now, plus its
running slower than usual for some reason.

Consider using System Restore (Accesories-System Tools-System Restore) and
restore the PC to an earlier date, to possibly identify the offending update.
If you find a restore point (date) that works, look at your Windows Update
history, at the Windows Update site, which should then tell you which update
may have caused the problem.

do you know if the album art is indeed already present on your system? (did
you import it manually?) does any of it show when playing in wmp, but not
when playing in MCE? have you changed any of the default settings in wmp
having to do with music (watched folders, how it organizes music, etc) if
not wmp should import album art by itself, but sometimes it finds what it
thinks is the correct album art, but is not correct, or sometimes it doesn't
find it at all. I manually do all of this myself to ensure it is correct.
you also have to ensure the mp3's tag properties are correct. you can check
these by highlighting songs in the wmp library and right clicking on any
highlighted song and selecting advanced tag editor and checking artist,
album artist, song title to see if they are correct.

are you using wmp to rip the music to your system? I would advise doing so
as it will either find the album info and fill it in for you, or if it don't
know you will have the option to fill in the info yourself. either way all
needed info would be present for everything to work in your music library.
if you want to search for album info try www.allmusic.com when you goto the
album info page for an album it will in most cases display an album cover,
just right click it and select save picture as, then name it folder and save
to the folder where the music files reside and the art should show up.

i read another post where the person removed the embedded album art, now it
works fine. But i've only done this on one album i dont wanna do this to all
14 gigs worth of Mp3s. Why did it work before and not now, i like my Mp3s
with embedded album art. Also i cannot write protect my mp3s like i used to
since upgrading to WMP 11 something keeps making all my mp3 files unread
instead of read only.

I don't see how embeded album art in mp3 files can cause it to not display,
I have 126gb of mp3's and all have the album cover embeded in the mp3 files,
as well as the album art in the folder itself and have experienced no
display problems att all. not bragging just don't understand how this can be
the cause of the problem, especially the fact that it was working fine, and
now it's not.

Terrob I'm having exactly the same problem. I tried the MP3 Tag Tools method,
it worked but it removed all the art from each individual track. So when you
run Album Art Fixer or Album Cover Art Downloader over the library all the
ablums will be missing album art.

This never uyse to happen it has only started in the past few weeks, not
sure what I have done/installed.

Any programs you have downloaded recently that may have caused this? The
onl;y thing I have done is installed a Logitech Bluetooth Mouse.... Any
others?

I have left posts on Thegreenbutton.com and XPMCE.com for the same problem

2 more points to add:
All nvidia drivers are up to date
When I take the Album art off for individual tracks (using MP3 Tag Tools)
the art works fine (as original post) but if I then play any other track that
hasn't been altered (i.e it still has embedded art) it still leaves the
original art on the screen. So I can play a whole night of tunes all with
only one cover album????????

not sure what other info I can offer as I am at a loss to what is the cause
of your problem.

I recently upgraded to WMP11, and even in there I see all of my album art
fine, but when I go into the XP Media Center, albums I've downloaded from the
new URGE service, dont' show me album art or are black...so I think its some
new small glitch...hopefully they can find a fix for or give us an
explanation on how to fix it.

maybe that will be corrected when wmp 11 is fully released and out of the
beta stage. since it's in beta stage there should be some kind of way to
file a problem report. I can not tell you how to do this as I am using wmp
10.

WMP11 appears to use a completely different approach to album art as
compared to WMP10. The benefit is that it is MUCH easier to add art in WMP11
(via drag and drop) but the drawback is that MCE 2005 does not see it (in
other words I got the same results).

I therefore reverted back to using WMP10.

PS. Since URGE is only available in one tiny country called America and I
live in a much bigger place called THE ENTIRE WORLD (except America), I have
no interest in strange URGEs.

LOL I like some of wmp 11's UI but there are things I use in wmp10 that were
removed or re-invented that I do not like, so like you I remain using wmp10.

Album Art in Windows is a mess. There are at least four different schemes
being used.

1. Embedded artwork in some formats (e.g. MP3)
2. Folder.jpg files in each album folder
3. Two other jpg files (one large one small) with unique ID numbers for each
album
4. and whatever system WMP 11 beta uses (it is definitely different to WMP
10)

Scheme number 3 seems to be the only one that reliably works in MCE 2005
(the others might work in WMP 10 or 11).

Scheme number 3 is probably automatically setup for you if you use WMP 10 to
rip the CDs to hard disk. It is definitely setup for you in WMP 10 if you
use the Find Album Info option.

Note: Find Album Info in WMP only does this for each individual track at a
time not the entire album.

I suggest picking ONE album and redoing Find Album Info for it and then see
if it shows up in MCE.

Note: I find that missing artwork in MCE normally shows as the generic
headphone icon.

from personal experience I never liked the automated system in wmp watching music folders, adding what it thinks is correct details and album art. I do everything manually including scanning for new music in the library when I add to it. I use a program called mp3tag. There are other similiar programs some free some not. mp3tag is free. I download album art from www.allmusic.com and/or www.amazon.com if I can't find it at www.allmusic.com  I resize all album art to 200x194 using a program called vueprint (not free) and volumize albums to 95db using mp3gain (free) I'm sure there are alot of different ways to get everything right, but this is how I do it. Music is very important to me so it's important that it is all correct. I hope this is in some way helpful.
