I would be surprised if it didn't playback a transcoded file (similar to how
current Portable Media Centers work now)...

Not natively, WMP10/11 will transcode them - the Zune is basically a Toshiba
Gigabeat PMC with some new firmware and WiFi...though it's worth noting that
the My TV menu item is removed, I think the MCE link is more "hidden" in the
Zune than in the PMC.

In the mean time you may try Zune Video Converter.

If the Zune is not a Plays For Sure Device then whether or not WMP10/11
converts the files is immaterial surely? It would depend on what conversion
software is included with the Zune. Whoever came up with a breakaway device
not Plays For Sure and without a TV menu must have been on drugs.

I don't have a Zune yet, so I can't answer that definitively, but I'm
99.999% sure that the Zune desktop software is going to be WMP on the
back-end, complete with the WMP transcoding. The Zune team surely didn't go
out and create new desktop media software from scratch...heck, the Zune is
more or less a Gigabeat S with WiFi.

Zune can not play DVR-MS file, you have to use 3-rd party software to
convert.

It seems that Windows Media Encoder can also do this. You might as well
have a try.

I think Wondershare Zune Video Suite is also a good choice. It can
convert all video format including
DVD/VCD/AVI/WMV/RM/RMVB/MPG/MPEG/ASF/DAT/MOV to Zune format, it also
can extract audio track from DVD or Video and save as MP3 format which
fit for any other MP3 player, its 24*7 hours online technical support
is really good.

Zune can only play WMV format, you need to get a video converter to
convert your dvr-ms files to WMV format. I recommend Wondershare Zune
Video Suite to you. It can convert all video format including

I guess I'll eat my prediction now... Pretty sad that they didn't get this
working for Media Center users...
