Can't get past welcome screen

newsgroups mine (or similar) is a common problem. However I have no yet
solved my issue.
My problem ocurred after I tried using startup manager (from
startupmanager.org). After rebooting I could not get past the Welcome screen
(even in safe mode). If I
click on a user it starts logging on then immediately logs off again.
I do not have an XP product CD to do the repair installation (as other posts
to similar problems have suggested). I'm trying to get hold of one but it is
XP pro. Can I use XP pro to repair MCE? Is there anywhere I can get an MCE
CD? Is there another solution?

advised me to post here with following details:
- What you did just before the problem occurred: I tried using Startup
Manager
- If this is a networked machine: It is connected to a router on which I
have other machines but it is not set up as a network
- If you can reach this machine via the network: I have not been able to
when tried so far
- If you know the administator password for this machine: I do
- If you could remove the hard disk if necessary: I could but have never
taken the back off the machine before before so this would be a last choice
option for me
- If you have access some desktop PC to which you could connect the hard
disk: I do
Curious
Do you know if you have a recovery partition on your HDD? If yes then the
instructions that came with the system should explain how to use to
reinstall your OS.

I have tried safe mode without networking.
As far as I know I do not have a recovery partition. I have a recovery
CD where the only option is to format the hard drive and reload the
system as per the purchased system.

XP Pro is not Media Center, and won't repair it properly.
You could borrow someone's MCE disk, perhaps, but you'd need your own
activation code.
Can you, on the computer you're using to post from, download and burn a
bootable CD of a program that can fix the boot record? Although your
problem reads to me more like a corrupt OS...

I've tried to find an MCE CD but can not. I can only find pro. I have
an activation code just not the CD
I could download a programme to fix. Can you recommend a program?

You can not repair MCE with XP Pro CD.
Can you log in Safe mode? If ,then try the following:-
Restore XP's Welcome/Logon Screen

I was originally going to recommend GPartEd, but I don't think it does
what is needed. Googling a bit, I begin to think I'm out of my depth
here, so the safest thing to do might be to keep my mouth shut :-)
I do have a disk labeled "Vista Recovery (for 64-bit), Bootable". It
claims to come from www.vistax64.com, Vista Forums. I don't remember,
and can't seem to find out, how I got it :-(
Here's one possibility (I downloaded it once from the link below, but I
needed Google to get this link again):

I don't think it's the one above from vistax64; I can't find the D/L in
my computer now, and I can't find my related links either. Weird - I'm
usually careful about keeping links, but I screwed up here. Or maybe I
have a cyberpoltergeist.
Googling Vista Recovery CD brings up a few hits. I looked at one; it
pointed to the above neosmart link :-)
Wish I could help more. I'll have to clean up my favorites and my
download folder, apparently :-(
