Okay, so I goofed. I had had outlook 2007 trial on my Vista Home Pro laptop
for a while so I could transfer my contacts from an old pst file to Vista
Contacts. I did that and realized I had never uninstalled the trial
outlook/office that I no longer needed so did that today. I thought I had
only uninstalled the programs associated with it, but apparently I goofed
and uninstalled something I shouldn't have. Now when I click on a mailto
link in firefox, I get an error that my "default email client isn't
installed correctly" which it is.

Is there a way to view a history of what I uninstalled? There was something
called like "Microsoft Office Business Connectivity" or something like that
which I suspect is the culprit, but I cannot remember the exact name of it
to find and reinstall it :( I thought it was part of office only, but I
suspect now that it just had "office" in the name to confuse me.

Thanks in advance.

There should be no need to reinstall anything from Office.
To ensure that Windows Live Mail has all possible defaults:
Open Vista's Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Hi Gary

I had looked at the program defaults before I sent this message and it
did say "this program has all its defaults", but I went back and looked
again
and the defaults were screwy under the "custom" tab. I fixed it all back
and now all is well again. Not sure how that did that. Vista did an update
a bit earlier today so maybe that's what did it.

Anyway, everything is normal again but thanks for the help!

Sounds related to a problem I recently solved concerning
WLMail being installed while OE stays my default mail account.

It turns out that WLMail sets itself up in HKCU
while OE only sets HKLM...

<paste>

I just figured my case out. WLMail set HKCU\Software\Clients\mail\(Default)

OE apparently only ever sets HKLM... ; )

What is odd is that sendmail evidently checks the latter when it
is asked to do a Send Link by E-mail... and the former when it is asked
to do a Send Page by E-mail... ??! (Hence in one case an OE composition
window was being opened and in the other case the previously described
bizarre scenario involving a prompt for creating an E-mail account, etc.
finally results in a WLMail composition window being opened. YMMV. <w>)

BTW there is still another quirky symptom from the same test scenario
that someone might like to look at. E.g. starting with About:Blank
File, Send... Page by E-mail... inexplicably still causes *two* prompts about
current document type cannot be sent...would you like to send a shortcut...

ICIM my OS is XPsp2 and my browser is IE7.
