Hi,
Sending emails from Windows Live Mail has stopped working. This was working
fine then just quit working one day. No known changes have taken place on
PC.

Symptoms:
. Get mail works fine
. Send mail results in "0x800CCC0F IXP_E_CONNECTION_DROPPED Connection
closed" error - every time
. Tried another account on same PC - same problem
. Tried mail account on different PC on same home network (wired) - send
works fine on the other Vista computer (with Live Mail too).
. Sending mail works from Mail on ISP's website
. Problem still exists with Window's Firewall off

Configuration:
. Live Mail version 12.0.1606
. Windows Vista
. Wireless to home network
. ATT Yahoo mail server
. SMTP setting: secure SSL connection, port 465, server requires
authentication (security required by ISP)

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is your anti-virus set to scan e-mail?

With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs, simply disabling the
e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it. It simply tells the
program not to flag any messages. It still processes all the messages
and may still cause send/receive problems. What you may need to do is
uninstall the anti-virus program, then reinstall it using a custom
install option and unselect the e-mail scanning component for
installation.

You may want to enable SMTP logging to get more information.

To enable logging select Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance,
Troubleshooting. Check the box to enable and click APPLY. Run the
Send/Receive, then click the box uncheck and APPLY.

POP3 enables both POP3 and SMTP logging.

The logging information will be appended to WindowsLiveMail.log in the
same location as the WLM Store Folder (click the STORE FOLDER button
above Troubleshooting to see its location).

The WindowsLiveMail.log grows indefinitely. You may want to rename (or
delete) the current log file before starting logging in order to get a
more manageable file size. WLM will automatically create a new log file
when needed if one doesn't exist.

That's not the complete error message. Please right-click on the
error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

I just tried to send myself an email through 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' w/SSL.
I got an error. Not quite the same as yours:

| Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78

However, there is much more to my error than that line. I clicked in the
message window which popped up with the error, and then did a right-click,
copy. The entire message, pasted from my clipboard:

| The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'x.xx...@yahoo.com'.
|
| Subject '[TEST] Send error?'
| Server Error: 553
| Server Response: 553 From: address not verified; see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html
| Server: 'smtp.att.yahoo.com'
| Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78
| Protocol: SMTP
| Port: 465
| Secure(SSL): Yes

Do you see the difference between the abbreviated error you posted (leaving
us to do an Internet search on:

| "0x800CCC0F IXP_E_CONNECTION_DROPPED Connection closed"

And hope that we find something relevant?

BTW, the problem in this case is that the 'n.xx...@yahoo.com' email address
is not associated with the account loging. Yahoo! Mail servers are tricky
that way; your "Sender:" email address must either match your login ID, or
be "verified" through a simple process. I should have used,
'nxx...@yahoo.com', which *is* associated with the login ID. After removing
the period, the email was successfully sent:

Anyway, I hope this illustrates the need to include the *entire* error
message, not just some failure code. There may be a clue in the information
you failed to provide. But it isn't a failure of WLM to connect with
'smtp.att.yahoo.com'; my headers are from a test message making just that
connection.

There is a "New" button right next to the "Reply" button. I wonder what that
does?

Bad form. You should learn how to use the tool. Also, did you know that you
don't have to access these groups using a browser? Using a client, even
Windows Live Mail, is much more convenient! Just click on the "Newsgroup"
icon at the bottom of the Windows Live Mail window, then click on the "Add a
newsgroup account". Use 'msnews.microsoft.com' as the server name; login name
and password are not required for this server.

Given that people tend to confuse Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Mail,
and Windows Mail (thanks to Microsoft frequently changing the names of
services and clients), you really need to specify what you are using.

Windows Live Hotmail? Used to be called, "Windows Live Mail".
Windows Live Mail? Used to be called, "Windwos Live Mail desktop".
Windows Mail? The email client included in Windows Vista, and replaces MS
Outlook Express, formerly included with Windows XP, and earlier.

When you post back your question, best to start a new thread, and choose the
correct group. There is a different group for each of:

Windows Live Hotmail ('microsoft.public.msn.discussion').
Windows Live Mail ('microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop')
Windows Mail ('microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail')

Thanks for everyone's help so far. First, I tried to disable virus
protection (MS OneCare) and that did not help. I haven't had time to
uninstall and reinstall OneCare at this time but I'm not convinced this is
the problem.

Here's the detailed error text and the Live Mail log text for the same
error:

My money is on OneCare being the culprit.
It hasn't been a problem in the past, but the last few days there
have been several reports of send failures from users running OneCare.

Interesting. I don't see what is happening, only a difference from my log:

| SMTP: [db] Connecting to 'smtp.att.yahoo.com' on port 465.

| SMTP: [db] srv_name = "smtp.att.yahoo.com" srv_addr = 69.147.64.31:465

| SMTP: [db] Negotiating secure connection with 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider'.

It is at this point that the server closes your connection; yet mine
continues:

One has to wonder what is this "Microsoft Unified Security Protocol
Provider", and whether it can become corrupt for some reason.

Agreed. Over the past 19 months I've seen very few reports
of antivirus-type trouble from those running OneCare.
For the few that have reported trouble, though, we've eliminated
pretty much every other possible culprit. I'm still waiting to hear
if a OneCare uninstall solved their problem.

No luck yet. Here's what I've tried:
* turn off Live OneCare service (in admin tools) - didn't work
* started Vista in safe mode with network - didn't work
* perform a system restore to Sep 7, when mail was working - didn't work
* installed new beta LiveMail - didn't work

Same problem each time.

I'll probably try AT&T tech support next (using my MS Equipt subscription
support). I'll be sure to post the resolution once it happens. It may take
a few more days since I need to find the time to continue to work this
problem.

Thanks again,
Brian

Good Luck with AT&T support. I was online with them for about 2 hours
tonight. No luck and no help at all. They told me to delete my mail
account and I asked if I would loose any email messages....they say "No,
you will not loose any email messages." Well....they lied. I lost all
Inbox messages as well as all my Sent Mail messages.

If you research my posts on this forum? You'll find that the first
problem was due to Norton Antivirus. The next problem was due to AT&T
changing the smtp mail gateway name. This time???? I have no clue as to
why I can't send email.

I too am using MS OneCare and have NEVER had an issue due to OneCare.
This could be the first....but who knows.

Tech support personnel are not yet familiar with the odd characteristics
of WLMail, such as its tendency to delete all mail folders for an account
when you delete that account. No other mail client does this.

I'll ask you the same question I asked Brian, any chance you'll do a
temporary uninstall of OneCare just to see if that cures the problem?

I wish somebody would look at what this 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol
Provider' thing is doing. Two posters have logs showing a client misbehaving
exactly at the point where this thing is being invoked. It appears that MS
Outlook Express does not have it. Unfortunately, the MS Outlook users have a
similar problem are not posting logs, so I can't tell if OL also uses this
tool.

Bingo! I have no idea what it does, but it is the same in both your log, and
Brian's log. And, in my logs, where I am sending successfully, I don't get a
"server closed the connection" after that entry. And MS Outlook Express does
not have it; nor do any other non-MSFT clients.

I have seen two posters using MS Outlook 2003, one with problems on the
'at&t Yahoo! HSI' secure mail servers, and another with an unspecified
message submission port to Gmail. I know that Gmail also uses port 465 with
SSL, and am trying to get that poster to post logs. I'd really like to know
if MS Outlook 2003 is also using this thing. It really is starting to look
like this may be the cause of the problem. And neither AT&T tech support,
nor Yahoo! Mail tech support (because their servers are involved) will know
squat about this, 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider',
thingamajig.

Right now, my money is on this being a Microsoft issue.

I doubt it. I have the same type of accounts as the two individuals who
reported trouble (AT&T Yahoo! and Gmail, both using port 465/SSL), and
have had no service interruptions. If it was a Microsoft bug, you'd be
seeing a lot more complaints about it here.

I doubt it is a server issue for the same reason you doubt it is an MSFT
issue.

I am just wondering if it is a corruption in the "provider". Not,
necessarily, a generic bug, because I can successfully send through
'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' with WLM 12.0.1606. Rather, something broke in a
particular installation. I'd like to get more data, but those reporting the
failures are often not technically inclined, and don't understand the
importance of providing logs, or even details, such as version numbers. A
poster with a similar issue in the 'sbcglobal.help.tech.email' group says
only: Vista, Windows Mail. Better than most, but still lacking such details
as whether SP1 is installed, or the Windows Mail version number. I've asked
him for a log, as well as the poster with the Gmail failure.

I'll do a complete uninstall / test Live Mail / then reinstall of OneCare /
test LM again next - I was just trying to avoid this because of the hassle
of doing so. Give me a day or two.

Thanks,
Brian

Wow. I did a search for 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider'
and came up with a lot of hits. Looks like "Norman" is quiet the techy
dude as I've seen several good informational posts with his name on
them.;)

Looks like through the searches that this 'Microsoft Unified Security
Protocol Provider' has been a problem for several reasons.

Is there ANY mail client software that runs on the local box that will
work?? I just want to put an end to this once and for all.

Doing some futher testing....my wife also has a user account on this
machine. She has her own email account and uses Windows Mail client. I
can send mail from her user account/mail client...but not from mine
(Primary user account/admin/mail client).

So now...the plot thickens...why does a secondary mail client work and
not one that's tied to a primary user account on a home pc?

Just thought I'd through that in the mix. :p :geek:

The easy inference is that there is something broken in your mail
client, which is different from your wife's mail client. Yet I have
seen the same type of scenario on a two user PC where the culprit
turned out to be the antivirus program.

I've been wrong before, and maybe now, as well. Three users of MS Outlook
2003 are also having troubles, on *two* different secure servers:

smtp.gmail.com:465 w/SSL
smtp.att.yahoo.com:465 w/SSL

One has posted his connection log, and the 'Microsoft Unified Security
Protocol Provider' is not mentioned. Also a use of Windows Mail, which comes
with Vista. He has not posted his connection log, yet.

So far, I see people having trouble with SSL on two different secure SMTP
servers, using three different MSFT clients; and nothing common between
them.

We got three reports today (actually on 9/26) of the same issue on
the Windows Mail newsgroup (using the Windows Mail client).

Thread here:

| Subject: Outlook 2003 & Gmail Error 0x8004210B
| Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 20:14:02 -0700
| Message-ID: <410D42B3-7A6D-44D8...@microsoft.com>

Poster has posted a log from Outlook 2003. Using 'smtp.gmail.com:465'. I am
going to try and track down the other threads. I'd be curious about access
to 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465', as well as any other ':465', with the
following MSFT clients:

MS Outlook (all versions)
MS Outlook Express
Windows Mail
Windows Live Mail

I've got access to three of the above, and most work with both
'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' and 'smtp.gmail.com:465'. I am currently running
another test of Windows Live Mail with:

'smtp.gmail.com:465'
'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.jp:465'

I will configure the Vista laptop later, to test them with Windows Mail. I
already tried 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' with Windows Mail to get a log. I'll
probably log 'smtp.gmail.com:465' and 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.jp:465' there, as
well.

All I know is that this saga still continues for many and I'm past ready
for it to be resolved. I'm a 28 year Unix geek and this Winders stuff is
a real pain to troubleshoot...mainly because I don't have a clue how to
start detailed logging and such as that. Maybe when I retire.....I can
get better and Windows. ;)

Hi again,

I uninstalled MS OneCare, which was even more of a pain than I anticipated.
I could easily uninstall it, but when I went to reinstall it with the MS
Equipt product disk, the only option it presented with the install program
was to UNINSTALL all of MS Equipt, which of course includes MS Office and a
few other apps (there was no repair option, no individual app option, etc.).
So I uninstalled all of Equipt. But Live Mail still would not send - same
exact error. I reinstalled Equipt (including OneCare) and the problem still
persists.

I'm ready to remove the att/yahoo subaccount that is giving me this problem
but I don't believe this will help either because (1) it's also happening on
the same computer with a different mail account and (2) it's not happening
on another computer on the same home network with either of the mail
accounts. So this seems like a machine specific problem, but who knows at
this point. I've run out of things to try.

Thanks for going to all that trouble to uninstall OneCare.
A pity that it did not prove to be the culprit!
At this point I am totally out of ideas as to what the next
troubleshooting step should be. :-(

Addendum: Two different users ("Tony B" and "Mark 32") reported
in the Windows Mail newsgroup earlier today that uninstalling
OneCare fixed the 0x800CCC0F error for them.

One poster in the AT&T Midwest forum of DSL Reports, posted a solution which
worked for him here:

Never mind....I found it. :o

Deleting the secure key worked perfectly. :D

In Windows Live Mail:
1. Click on *Tools*
2. Click on *Safety Options*
3. Click on *Security*
4. Click on *Digital IDs*
5. Under the *Personal* tab you will see a digital id. Highlight it and
click the *Remove* button.
6. Start up Windows Live Mail and start sending....at least this is
what fixed it for me as well. :D

WOW - this fixed the problem for me too! A 20 second fix after all. I
don't know how the extraneous certificate got saved in the first place
however. But it's nice to know that this WAS a machine-specific problem.

Thanks everyone once again for all of your support.
