Why doesn't Live Mail learn from previous replies? Sometimes items end up in
Junk despite the fact that I have indicated that they are not junk. Other
times, emails from sources that I have marked as junk turn up in my normal
mail box.

Designating that a message is Not Junk does nothing but move that
message to the Inbox folder. If your wanted emails wind up in the Junk
E-mail folder, then you either need to add that sender to your Contacts,
or else whitelist them via the Safe Senders list.

Fyi...you didn't specify
- if this applies to a Hotmail type account(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com etc) or a pop3 account
- using a Live ID to sign on to Windows Live
- not signing on with a Live ID to Windows Live

If the latter, the Junk Mail filter is static and only current at best to the last version release.

If the account is a Hotmail account, the web Junk Filters take precedent prior to WLM's local Junk mail filter.

I did as you suggested, all was well for a while, now it seems back to the
way it was.
so I will have to re-adjust everything again.
Not a huge problem in the scheme of things, just annoying.
Thanks for responding Gary.

What is the answer to this problem? It didn't seem clear. I've decided I've
had it with how much junk mail I get and started adding them to the blocked
senders list and I'm still getting them even though they are blocked! Very
frustrating. Also, is there an option to set filters myself?

Thanks.

Windows Live Mail does not have a 'learning' filter. Marking a message as
'junk' does nothing but move it to the Inbox.

Using 'Blocked Senders' is ineffective for most spam because the spammer
does not reuse the same sending address.

The best solution is to use a mail provider who has a very effective spam
filter on the server. Gmail is one of those.

On Fri, 02 Jul 2010 23:27:19 -0700, Sam typed this message:

You might try setting up a whitelist of email addresses you want to hear
from and anyone who isn't in your whitelist is sent to spam or your own
quarantine folder.

Create a whitelist addr list from your existing addr lists, then adding
from addressees you reply-to.

Add a filter to send "from" email addresses that are not in the Whitelist
to spam or quarantine folder.

You can review the quarantine folder for addressees you may want to keep
and add them to the whitelist.

Hi Gary,

What I noticed is that I was receiving junk mail from the exact same address
that I had just blocked! Obviously, the blocked sender list is not
effective. It would be nice if it did work though. Thanks for your
responses, I will look into the options provided.

Likely, because some spam uses different ever-changing addresses, that is why you keep
getting the same spam even though blocked.

I have not heard of a bug that affects the Blocked Senders feature.
Mine works fine.
It is more likely that the email address you have in Blocked Senders
is not identical to the email address from which the junk mail is coming.

Check the headers of the message..the actual sender may not be the addresses found in the From field.

I've done both and I still get messages that I want in my junk mail folder. I
have added the domain to the safe senders list and added the email address as
a contact, and checked the blocked senders list to make sure it was not on
there as well. From a Google search I see that this is a common issue,
something with the whitelist appears to be broken. I have a hotmail account
which I am accessing via Windows Live Mail.

I use K-9 from http://keir.net/k9.html
as a spam filter. It works well with pretty much every email program I tried
it on. Small and portable, free, no nags or ads. Clean and powerful filter
that uses itself as a local mail server. Then, make a rule in the email
program to filter out SPAM.

Feel free to ask if you try to use it and get confused. I can probably help.

Note that the Blocked Senders list takes precedence over the Safe Senders list,
so you need to be absolutely sure that the email address and domain of your
wanted sender is not on that Blocked Senders list. Other than that, I don't
know what could cause it.

If your Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail is accessed via HTTP (not POP),
then the 'junk' determination is made by the Hotmail server, not by Windows
Live Mail, so look at the filter settings on the webmail server.

Could you please provide more information about how to determine the actual
sender when it is different from the From field? Also, please explain why
this would prevent WLM and HotMail from blocking a message where the From
field is already on the Blocked Senders List.

I keep getting unwanted newsletters from three different senders. I have
repeatedly had WLM add these senders' domain names to the Blocked Senders
List. I have checked the Blocked Senders List and I see all three of the
domain names that I see in the From fields for these messages. These domain
names are NOT in my Safe Senders List nor in my Contacts. Yet, the unwanted
messages keep getting through.

While viewing that message press Ctrl+F3. That will show you the raw message
source which includes all the hidden headers. Make sure the 'From:' data
you see there is identical to what you have in the Blocked Senders list.

I just started using Windows 7. When I receive incoming email, my images
are not there. It says, "Some images in this msg. not shown." There is a
Delete and Block/Show images. I always have to click on "show images."

How do I lock this so I can always see the images when new msgs. are
received?

Thanks.

It's not related to Windows 7.
If using Windows Live Mail configure your settings as noted below

WLM version 2009 Build 14 - Tools/Safety Options/Security/Download Images
and
WLM version 2010 Build 15 - Alt F/Options/Safety Options/Security/Download Image

- uncheck Block Images and other external content
- check show images and external content sent from email addresses in my Safe Senders list
- Also check 'Trust email from my contacts' - Tools/Safety Options/Safe Senders
