Subject: Hotmail fails to synchronise
Lately I have been having trouble getting Hotmail and
Outlook Express 6 to synchronise with each other.  This is
the error message that I get:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server.
Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.
com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Port:
0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number:
0x80004005

I am using this HTTP server that Outlook put in: [http:
//services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp].  I have also
tried [http:/oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata], but it fails to
recognise that as well.

I have tried pinging both addresses but I do not get an
answer from either of them.  Anyone got any clues?  Muchly
appreciated.

Is this sudden/new behavior or an ongoing problem?  Is it a free Hotmail
account (n...@hotmail.com) or an MSN account (n...@msn.com)?

These very infrequent '0x80004005' errors (if not due to temporary problems
on Hotmail's end) are most often associated with the proxy server at your
ISP (though most ISPs have upgraded their proxy servers to cope with WebDAV
a long time ago).

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q259133

One simple test would be to ask someone else that you know who uses the same
ISP if they can create a new Hotmail account, and access it through OE.

Also try the account in a new Named Identity.

It's only happened recently - I use a free address, and I've emailed my ISP
regarding WebDAV but haven't got a response.
As I said, I've tried pinging the server address, but haven't got a
response.  Can you or anyone try pinging the address I pasted in my earlier
post?

Thanks

Microsofts firewalls block ICMP  packets, so you can't ping the servers,
but they're still there. (This is fairly normal practice these days).

Check your clock, make sure that you're set to receive cookies, and try
again. if you still have problems, turn on HTTP Troubleshooting
(Tools/Options/maintenance) and see if there's anything relevant in the
HTTPMail.LOG file.

I checked with some other people whom are with my ISP, and their Hotmail
works fine for it - no problems, so I'm suspecting it is my router.

I've been fiddling with my router for hours, and now some people are

If there's a transparent proxy, it's show up in the HTTPMail.LOG file - the
Server: line should say

Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0

If your ISP is using a transparent proxy, the Server line will show it.

What make/model of router is it? Linksys BEFSR41, BEFSR81 or BEFW11S4, by
chance?  Even if it's not, you may need to tweak your MaxMTU settings.

After speaking with my ISP, they have revealed that is infact their fault -
their use of a transparent proxy server does not support WebDAV - they are
working to fix it - thanks people.
