Well, first of all, you should back up important information.

Under what circumstances are you getting the error?

I get the error when opening OE, again when e-mailing from a web page, and
also when e-mailing from my photos/my documents. I use Trend Micro Internet
Security, just downloaded 2007, when the message began. Have already worked
with one of their techs and ruled out their firewall as the cause. The only
thing I have not done is uninstall-reinstall their product (awaiting their
response to my e-mail request of 4 hours ago-the product indicated that no
reinstall would be available) although their tech did not suggest this at the
time we isolated the firewall (about 3 days ago)...by the way, Steve, should
I actually be backing up address book entries?

This is often caused by an anti-spam program or an anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

> Frank...Although I don't have Norton, I did follow your suggestion and went into my Trend Micro PC Cillin Internet Security 2007 and deactivated the incoming e-mail monitor in my anti-virus. I then reset (deleted the characters and retyped them)my server login name and password. I closed and reopened OE. The error message is still there...DBL

Frank...I am so confident that you will be able to resolve my error message
issue, keeping me from taking the drastic measure of downloading Pegasus
Mail...now that I have learned you put your first machine together back in
'79 (the year my daughter was born)

Try disabling your antivirus software completely. Then remove your mail
account, close OE and reopen it, and then add your mail account back again
and see if that works.

It sounds as if you didn't disable outgoing as well as incoming and also
they may change the server ports on you, which is why I say to remove the
account and add it back again.

Find the wab file. That is the address book and make a copy of it.

Try turning Trend off altogether.
Uninstalling and reinstalling OE should not affect your contacts, but to be
safe you can export them as a Text (Comma Separated Values) file.

What is your Windows version?
What are the versions of
inetcomm.dll
msoe.dll
and
directdb.dll ?

My OS is WinXP...My most recent effort since my initial post was just
completed...Trend Micro PC Cillin Internet Security 2007
uninstalled/reinstalled...it is not the cause of the error message (this was
simply one of my frustrated, amateur-like efforts to go for a fix...I am
aware of the system restore option, and I am painfully aware of the
uninstall-"gamble on losing critical data"-option with OE as well) As you can
read here, PA Bear, the Frank Saunders suggestion to reset server names in OE
did not work...either did the Hotmail Plus tech suggestion of removing my
hotmail account and re-registering it...As the language in the error message
points to a Hotmail Server issue, why doesn't a fix exist thru MS? (I can't
believe they are unaware of this, yet a search for the 0x80004005 only seems
to indicate that there are a stack of different issues all falling under the
same error message #...except mine...its hard to believe I am the only lucky
one in the universe with this issue resolution still unknown to MS)

Please help...I am already looking at how to migrate my OE contacts and
e-mails into another e-mail program so as to get out of the way of a possibly
"can't be fixed error message" taking over my wife (OK, so I made a little
joke-I needed to crack myself up for a minute-I'm not even married anymore)
