Can't display pictures or some attachments

Hi! I've received some e-mails through my hotmail account w/attachments.
Some I can open and others I can't. Also, belong to some MSN groups, some
pictures have a red X in the corner. When I click on 'Show Picture' it still
won't open. Can anyone help with this. I'm new to this computer thing. Thank
