After SP2 installation I experience greater difficulties with my Outlook
Express. It truncates my texts if they are in the HTML format. It is exactly
Symptom 6 of the Description of the cumulative update for Outlook Express
(KB887797).
But in my Windows folder I found KB887797-OE6SP1-20041112.131144.log, where
I read, that I tried to install this update, but received message, that
"version of Outlook Express you have installed does not match the update you
are trying to install."
Moreover, in very fresh document "Description of Software Update Services
and Windows Server Update Services changes in content" (15.12.2005) I find,
that KB887797 "update is no longer superseded by MS05-030; therefore,
reversed previous changes."
With all this going on my computer is updating automatically from Microsoft
site.
I have finally got confused, and my Outlook Express truncates my texts if
they are in the HTML format as usual.
Can somebody help me to fix my Outlook Express behavior?
Thanks in advance
Lev

Asked/Answered in WinXP General newsgroup: http://snipurl.com/kufb

Are you posting from the machine in question (from your headers: "Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180")?

Thanks, Robear!
You are right! The 887797 isn't installed in my computer. I found
KB887797-OE6SP1-20041112.131144.log and I thought it means that the 887797
is installed. But I found in the log-file that "version of Outlook Express

you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
I tried to install this update once more and received the same answer -

"version of Outlook Express you have installed does not match the update you
are trying to install."
Moreover, in very fresh document "Description of Software Update Services
and Windows Server Update Services changes in content" (15.12.2005) I find,
that KB887797 "update is no longer superseded by MS05-030; therefore,
reversed previous changes."

site.
I have finally got confused, and my Outlook Express truncates my texts if
they are in the HTML format as usual.
Thanks in advance
Lev

here?

If you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and choose Custom option,
what updates are listed? (Don't install them just yet.)

Hi Lev: You are missing some updates since the versions of those files
should be 6.2900.2670 if all updates were installed correctly. Did you by
chance have an antivirus program during the download and install of the
recent updates? If so, try removing the updates, then disable your
antivirus and try again. Do you show that KB 837009 has also been
installed?

Thanks, Jim!

I found the Q837009_xpe_sp2_x86_enu.exe file and downloaded it. But I could
not install this update. I received next message:

QFE Installer Error. WEUpdate cannot retrieve information needed for setup
from database. Setup cannot continue.

(My Norton AV was disabled at that.)

But I found "Q837009" in my Registry. I think it means, that this update was
installed in my computer. Isn't it so?
You advised me to try removing the updates, then disable my antivirus and
try install them again. But I have about 80 folders like
$NtUninstallKB.....$\ How many of them and which of them should I removing?

Is there more easy way? Is it possible to find and download new version of
MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL and replace them under Save Mode or Boot Disk
running? Or it is not enough for this update?

Thank in advance

Lev

If the problem is recent, try going to Control Panel, Add/Remove Software.
Scroll to the bottom where you will see a list of Hotfixes applied. Pick
the most recent ones that would have been installed at some date that goes
back to when the problem occurred and remove those. Then reboot with the
antivirus program disabled and go to Windows Update and download and install
all updates marked as Critical for the operating system. You should also
find KB837009 in that list.

Windows File Protection should prevent a removal and install of newer
versions of msoe.dll and inetcomm.dll if you tried it.

Description of the Windows File Protection Feature:

Thanks, Jim! In my Add/Remove Programs I have found about 40 updates. They
have different names: Security update for Windows XP (KBxxxxxx), Update for
Windows XP (KBxxxxxx), Windows XP Hotfix - KBxxxxxx. There are no KB837009
and KB887797 among them. And there are no updates for Outlook Express
specially. Why? Should the updates for Outlook Express be there?

But I have found solution for my problem! I have read on
http://forum.ixbt.com/topic.cgi?id=22:53433 (in Russian) that Outlook
Express - <<Tools/Options/Sends/HTML Settings/Encode text using - Base 64>>
setting removes this problem. I check it, it's OK!

But maybe the Base 64 is not good setting for another reason?

Thank in advance

Lev

Base64 is in OE primarily to encode attachments to HTML messages. The
default sending format for HTML messages is MIME/Quoted Printable. But, if
using Base64 solves the problem, I see no real problem with it. Good luck.
