The "To free disk space, OE can...." massage pop up every 10 seconds to
remind me about it and it is so annoying for the fact that I don't even use
OE at all, not even once! I am running WinXP Media Center with SP3, I don't
have this problem previously with SP2. Can some please advice how to disable
it, or provide some guide on how to uninstall it (if forced to).

Thanks.

why not just let it compact the data base.

while it is working do not use the computer.

Have you installed Windows Desktop Search?

Apparently, if its set to index OE, it invisibly opens and closes OE
every few minutes in order to the index the OE message store. After 100
open/closes OE will start prompting you about compacting.

Hi,

I had tried it, and it only stop for a short period (say 10-20 minutes) and
then it will come out again. The fact that I do not use OE at all doesn't
help, there is nothing to compact!

Thanks for replying.

Hi,

Not sure about that, how do I check if I did installed WDS? and if I did
installed it (actually it is my wife's computer) how do I solve this problem?
Thanks for advice.

I don't use it, but look in the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. I
imagine it would be there.

If you are not using OE and do not plan on using it in the near future, try
the following to stop the prompt:

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components. Uncheck
Outlook Express, reboot and test it.

If that does not do it, or you already disabled OE in Add/Remove Windows
Components, re-enable it. Delete any and all identities and message stores.
Restart your computer and disable OE again.

To get to the identities & message store folders:

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

Then follow this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\Long string of letters and numbers\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Delete the Outlook Express folder and then back up to the identity and
delete it.

Repeat if you have more identities.

In addition to Michael's question about Windows Desktop Search, your answers
to the following question will help us to diagnose the problem:

=> Is Windows Live Mail installed? Has it ever been installed?

=> Has anyone ever used Outlook Express on this machine?

=> Is Outlook Express enabled in Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
| Add/Remove Windows Components?

=> Did you install WinXP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?

=> What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed WinXP
SP3?

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed the instruction and done all
suggested, but the OE still coming back to haunt me altough I had already
disable it and deleted the identities folder (after rebooting the identity
folder seems to recreate again). And the prompt still coming out as usual.

Any other idea?

Hi PA Bear,

Below is my reponse to your Qs:

> => Is Windows Live Mail installed? Has it ever been installed?

I don't remember installing this and don't see any program on the program
list.

> => Has anyone ever used Outlook Express on this machine?

I don't think so as we all only use web based mail through IE (yahoo,
hotmail, lycos).

> => Is Outlook Express enabled in Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
> | Add/Remove Windows Components?

It was enable before this, but before replying to you, I had it disabled as
per suggestion by Bruce Hagen.

> => Did you install WinXP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?

Via Windows Update.

> => What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
> anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
> (if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed WinXP

Running Norton Antivirus 2006. No anti-spyware installed. Using Kerio
Personal Firewall 4. I think only the Norton is running when I update the
SP3. The pc has recently had it hard drive failed, so I bought a new hd and
reinstall from recovery cd (which the Norton came as bundle) and straigth
away doing XP updates. Only then I install the firewall and Office 2003.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info.

I am thinking what if I can roll back my system to before Office 2003
installation and then reinstall Office but leaving out the OE, will it help?
(I am not good at system configuration - just a application users, so bear
with me if I suggested something stupid).

Thanks.

1. Is your NAV 2006 subscription current and can you successfully check for
& install updates manually via Live Update?

2. The fact that NAV (and, possibly, Kerio) was enabled when you installed
SP3 /may/ have caused this behavior. See...

No. Outlook Express is part and parcel of Windows and has nothing whatsoever
to do with MS Office or Outlook (despite the name).

More:

=> Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
Mail: Is Outlook 2003 (already) selected here?

=> Is there a NEWS button anywhere on your Outlook Command Bar (toolbar)?

=> IE Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Newsgroups: Is this blank or
does it say Outlook Express? [NB: Don't select Outlook Express if it's not
already selected, just look & tell me what you find.]

Yes, I can update via Live Update and the list is upto date (still have

I am reading it right now. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall SP3?

> More:

> => Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
> Mail: Is Outlook 2003 (already) selected here?

I can't see any 'Mail' there. All I have is 'Computer Manufacturer',
'Microsoft Window', 'Non Microsoft' and 'Custom' . Only 'Custom' is
selected/activated and under it 'Choose a default email program' the 'Use my
current email program' is active but the 'enable access to this program' is
not tick/activated.

None.

It say Outlook Express.

Uninstalling/reinstalling WinXP SP3 may be worth trying. Make certain that
you disable SymProtect and adhere to everything in
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx
when uninstalling *and* reinstalling!

[If I had installed WinXP SP3 without disabling SymProtect and any other
Norton 360 process/service and/or Norton Add-ons, I would DEFINITELY do it!]

But please see the below first...

>> => IE Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Newsgroups: Is this blank or

>> does it say Outlook Express?...
> It say Outlook Express.

Well, this suggests that, in fact, OE had been enabled and possibly used at
some point in the past. Try the following:

1. Make certain that OE is disabled (unchecked) in Add/Remove Programs |
Add/Remove Windows Components.

2a. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local
Settings\Application Data <=this folder & delete the folder it contains
named Identities.

2b.. Repeat #2a for any other C:\Documents and Settings\<Users>

Do you have the folder?

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express"

If so, are there any files in it?

If you see the program MSIMN.EXE there, try renaming it to MSIMN.XXX and
see what happens.

Whenever I rename the msimn.exe to something else, it will recreate another
msimn.exe when the prompt pop up. Very strange.

Done all suggested, but still can't solve it. I even uninstalled and
reinstalled SP3 (with Norton and Kerio disabled). But after uninstall SP3, I
notice the prompt doesn't pop-up (however I did not wait for long enough
time). Maybe I should just revert back to SP2?

Signs are pointing to SP3 being the trigger. But there has to more than
that, or a lot more people would be seeing the problem.

That is interesting.

It does seem to confirm that whatever is causing the problem is loading
MSIMN.EXE rather than going straight to one of the DLL files.

It also seems to triggering a restore of the missing file. Perhaps from
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\msimn.exe

Does the restored file show the same date/time as the renamed one?

Is the machine a notebook or a desktop computer? Is it a Lenovo machine?

Are you using an IBM Rapid Access Keyboard or any keyboard with a Mail

Download RegMon at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896652.aspx.

Run the program and monitor the Compact Count Check registry value by
filtering on Compact Count Check.

This will identify the program that is incrementing this value and you
should be able to take steps to stop it by uninstalling the program or
stopping the service etc..

OK guys, I had managed to solve the problem (for the moment, but hope it will
be for permanent). Followed the advice from Larry, downloaded the RegMon and
it point to some plugin in Nero. So updated the Nero and there gone the
nagging OE popup (so far being about an hour or so with no popup). I will
update again if the popup come up again, otherwise please consider this post

Thanks to everyone for your effort and advice. Cheers.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded and installed it, and it point to some

Opps... I had already deleted the program and do not know if there is any log
file create by it somewhere which I can check? Well, I don't really pay
attention to the full details of which plugin/plugins but noted that whenever
the popup came on, the RegMon register some access to the folder that have
something like ...nero/plugin/... not being a technical guy, so I didn't
really pay attention to specific file/s that affect it. So I just assume Nero
is the culprit and 1st thing I do is to update it, and there gone my problem.
Sorry that I can't provide specific info on this, my apology.

On another note, I had this same Nero installed on my laptop (running XP Pro
with SP3), but do not suffer the same problem as the desktop. Not sure if it
is machine specific, or OS specific (desktop running XP Media Center). Hope
this little info somehow help.

Thanks.

Is a Norton application installed on the laptop?

Well, it runs a Symantec Antivirus as well as the Kerio Personal Firewall.
The SP3 was installed at my laptop after I updated the desktop first (that
was when I got to know about SP3 availability). So far no problem with OE on
my laptop (I don't use OE too).

One difference is that you're running Norton 360 on the desktop but Symantec
AntiVirus on the laptop...and the latter doesn't include the problematic
SymProtect AFAIK.
