Do you have this Registry key?...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4
If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?
If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero) and all should be well. (If that DWORD is not
present, don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values.)
Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.
cf. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#share
2. Your AVG definitions are *months* out of date, making AVG effectively
worthless. Configure AVG to seek updates daily at a time when your machine
is normally on and connected to the 'net.

I have the \WAB4 entry but there is no UseOutlook entry. Only "first run"
(1), "OlkContactRefresh"(0) , and "OlkFolderRefresh" (0).
Do you have any other ideas? I believe Outlook was once installed on this
computer in an earlier version of Office but I do not believe it still is.
2. I use Norton Anti-Virus and keep it up to date. I briefly installed AVG
when I was having trouble with my NAV subscription and I guess i never
deleted it.
Thanks,
Dave

2. You should *uninstall* AVG, not delete it. Having both AVG and NAV
(—>AntiSpam) running in the background may have something to do with this
problem or others, David.

The only directory service with "check names against this server" checked
was called "active server" which had "NULL" as the server. I tried
unchecking it but nothing happened.
But you did inspire me to uninstall AVG
Thanks!

<IMHO> I'd have uninstalled NAV and kept AVG. NAV's AntiSpam is one big
PIA. </IMHO>

Your new Identity will have its own Address Book. Enable 'View>Folders and
Groups' then look in Shared Contacts. You should find all of the contacts
from the old identity here. You may drag them into the main folder.
I appreciate your persistance.

Well, ya learn something new every day! I've never been aware of this
facility nor had I ever seen that topic in Help (don't be surprised <eg>).
Let's back up (quite) a bit.
1. Copy/paste this link http://aumha.org/mydetail.htm into an IE Addressbar
and click GO, then copy/paste the results into your reply. Example:
Browser Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 6.0
Browser & OS: (Major & Minor Version Information)
4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
;SP1;Q832894;Q330994;Q837009;Q831167;
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768
Color Depth: undefined
Java Enabled: true
2. IE Help>About> What version is displayed (e.g., 6.0.1234.5678XX <—include
any letters at the end)
3a. Is this a machine you purchased or one belonging to your employer? Is
it a PC or a laptop?
3b. Were you running an earlier Windows OS and then upgraded to WinXP? Was
the earlier OS WinME? How did you upgrade to XP and where did you get your
WinXP disc (upgrade or full version)?
3c. I believe you mentioned that MS Office or Outlook had been installed at
one point. When was that and what version of Office/Outlook? Were you
running WinXP then?
4a. Did this problem only begin after installing SP2?
4b. Were both AVG and NAV running in the background when you installed SP2?
Was Outlook Express?
Browser & OS: (Major & Minor Version Information)

;SP2;
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768

The PC is now almost five years old. It came with Windows98. The upgrade
to XP was several years ago, I don't remember what kind. The upgrade to SP2
was done by the CD.
> 3c. I believe you mentioned that MS Office or Outlook had been installed

I haven't had Outlook for several years. But I think it was on the original
version of Office installed.
>

YES. Everything was fine until SP2.
>
> 4b. Were both AVG and NAV running in the background when you installed

Both AVG and NAV were in the background when I installed SP2. Outlook
Express was not running, unless it does something in the background.

You are thorough!
Thanks,
Dave
I think your troubles may pre-date SP2, possibly even WinXP:
http://snipurl.com/9eg1 (Yes, I'm thorough! My MVP mentors taught me well.)
And was this your post?... http://snipurl.com/9eg5 You may be suffering
from the affects of hijackware. Does this problem persist as well? If it
does, proceed no further; If not...
Take a deep breath a cross your figurative fingers.
1. Backup your current OE store folder(s) and Address Book (such as it is).
(Better to have it and not need it than the opposite.)

2. Close *everything* (includes OE and any/all AV apps <eg>) except
(Windows) Explorer.
3a. Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>[enable 'Show Updates' at top]>Windows
XP Service Pack 2 > Remove
3b. Follow all prompts and reboot when directed to do so.
4a. Open OE6 SP1 and see if addresses and Address Book behave as they
should.
4b. Check Add/Remove Programs and confirm that neither MS Office or Outlook
is installed.
5. Assuming all is well, go to Windows Update and download SP2 again.
Before installing it, however, Close *everything* (includes OE and any/all
AV apps) except (Windows) Explorer.
6. Open OE6 SP2 and see if all is well.
7. Uncross fingers and breath deeply.
Print the following, cut it out and paste it prominently in the middle of
your monitor screen:
RESOLVED: I will close all running applications, including my AV app, before
installing *anything*.

The good news is that the snippet is not my post. There are many David
Martin's in this world!
Though I may have problems with my setup, this symptom did not appear until
I installed the SP2. And I do have it on CD so I don't have to download it
again. Nevertheless, I'm not sure that I want to uninstall and reinstall.
After all, the address book does work -- I just have to click on "show more
names" every time I use it. In fact I have am confident that I have already
spent much more time trying to fix it than I wasted by the extra click!
So unless I feel bored some evening, I think I will live with this bug
unless other problems emerge.
Thanks for all your help. You do an amazing job!

Such as you may have two (2) listings for John Smith, you may need to change one of them to:
J Smith or Jack Smith.
Same would go if you have John Smith listed twice, one for his home and one for his business address. For those, I use the abbreviation of "HME" or "BUS" (w/o quotes) for the person's middle name. So the autocomplete will work. You can create some way to separate the two names.

Thanks, David. IIWY I'd make and keep sequential backups of your store
handy. In time, your problem may turn out to be much more than an oddly
functioning Address Book. We're here to help if and when the time comes and
thank you very much for your feedback and your cooperation.
<curiosity gets the better of me> When did you graduate from Williams, what
the heck are you doing in UTC +0500 time zone and where are you doing it?
(Private reply would be fine, if you wish.)

Thanks for all your help. I do back up my messages and address book
periodically plus I keep them on my office computer also. But if things
start acting up then I will do another backup and uninstall SP2 (and maybe
reinstall Windows?). It has been reassuring to know that there are people
like you out there who will go out of their way to help find a solution to a
problem. I wish my company's help desk was half as accommodating!
I graduated from Williams in '72. They have a permanent email forwarding
service that I use so that when I go work in a strange country somewhere my
friends can still find me even though I have a new ISP provider. For the
past two years I have been living in Uzbekistan where I work on a
USAID-funded project to help think tanks here learn to analyze economic
policy issues.
Thanks again,
Dave

Again, you're most welcome. If all was well before installing SP2, you
shouldn't need to reinstall WinXP after uninstalling SP2, just reinstall
SP2. It's basically a new OS really, complete with new IE and OE versions.

Far out & good for you...and the Uzbekistani people! It's always reassuring
to see that not everyone of our generation has lost The Fire.
