AutoComplete doesn't work

password on certain sites on my Dell laptop with Windows XP Professional
(SP2), and IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519. I have AutoComplete
turned on properly in Internet Options. I have an older Toshiba laptop with
the same software and all options set the same way, and it works fine on
those sites. I have tried many suggested fixes (such as making sure the
Protected Storage service is running) but nothing works.

You might try the following and see if it helps:
AutoComplete does not save User ID or Passwords
For IE6 for all OS you could probably try doing the same commands
with rsaenh.dll. E.g.:
regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
Register rsaenh.dll
1. Click Start>Run
In the Open box, type regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
Click OK.
Click OK when the message that the registration is successful appears.
Then:
Click Start>Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
Click OK.
Click OK when the message that the registration is successful appears.

the list of form or password suggestions, follow these steps in Internet
Explorer:
1.On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.Click the Content tab.
3.Click AutoComplete.
4.Click the appropriate AutoComplete check boxes, or click Clear Forms or
Clear Passwords to clear all saved items from the appropriate AutoComplete
history.
5.Click OK, and then click OK

Have you tried turning AutoComplete off, restarting, turning it back on?
Next, you may have a damaged registry key.
Try this:
With no programs open,
Run REGEDIT and make your way to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft Internet Explorer
IntelliForms
SPW
Create a System Restore point or export that key (Registry> Export- just in
case you wish to undo the change) then delete it- just the SPW key.
Restart the computer.

Try clearing all the Temporary Internet files, delete the Online files as
well, and see if that helps.
It is possible that the History file that works with this is corrupt or
damaged. Try deleting the current one and let Windows crete a new one on
reboot. If you don't want to delete yet, just rename it to History_Old, the
reboot.
It is not uncommon for the cache to become corrupted.
For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site as the process and
paths differ from W98:

To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)
Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

and I think I now have a better idea of what's going on here. The problem
isn't what I thought it was. In fact, I'm not sure it's really a problem at
all.
In my original posting I mentioned that the AutoComplete problem was only on
certain sites. These were sites where I could not get AutoComplete to work,
even though it would work on those same sites on an older computer (actually
two other computers) with the same software and configuration. I took a
closer look at one of those sites where the AutoComplete would not work, and
I was surprised to see that in the html source code for the input form there
is an option that says "INPUT AUTOCOMPLETE="OFF"". This would seem to
explain why the AutoComplete would not work on that site with the newer
computer. It wasn't supposed to work! To prove this, I copied the source
code to my desktop, changed the option to say "INPUT AUTOCOMPLETE="ON"", and
then executed the form from my desktop. The AutoComplete worked perfectly.
So the real issue (which is really more of a curiosity than a problem) is
why does the AutoComplete work with those sites on the older computers? I
verified that when I access that site on the older computers, the source
code still says INPUT AUTOCOMPLETE="OFF"; yet the AutoComplete works fine.
As far as I can tell, the operating system (Windows XP SP2), browser version
and all internet options are set the same on all three computers. The only
real difference I can think of between the three systems is that the newer
computer (which I just got two months ago) came with SP2 pre-installed,
while the other two computers (which I got in 2003 and 2004) came with SP1
and got upgraded to SP2 along the way through Windows Update.
What's going on here??

I'm not quite sure what may be the reason for the change, but, it is likely
due to the security enhancements provided in the SP2. There are various
functions that were set to off as default. I am afraid I am not that
knowledgeable on this particular fucntion, however, here is some information
that might answer your question. And, perhaps someone else here may be able
to give you more details.
