Forgive this small personal indulgence. My father's best friend from
childhood, Tom Robinson, died this week. Tom was quite the guy. He was
energetic, artistic, a mischievous prankster, a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather - who loved Shane, Ben Hur, Star Trek, the outdoors, guns,
running, and life itself...The last half of his life was marked by his
conversion to Christianity - where he tirelessly tried to convince the rest
of the world that his path to the Lord was the only smart one to jump on.

One of Tom's more memorable pranks centered around his children. This photo
of Vincent Van Gogh hung in their parlor for many years. Tom told his kids
that it was a picture of their Uncle Vincent, waiting with delight until the
day they would run home from school with the news that "Uncle Vincent" was
really famous. Actually, Tom was a gifted painter himself and had felt a
certain affinity for Van Gogh...although, he set aside his art in later
years for the practical world of working to support his family.

I had lived with the Robinsons for several years early in their Christian
conversion and often heard this music playing. (The artist is Keith Green,
who was also an energetic Christian - killed tragically in a plane crash in
1982. )

Anyway, despite having left their little fold almost 20 years ago, my life
couldn't help but be deeply touched by the love and energy of this whole
family.

This is such a nice tribute to your family friend.  The thing with the Vincent portrait is precious!  Did the kids ever figure out the truth on their own?

You've done the absolute best thing I could ever think of to honor someone, and that is by remembering them... you know that this man has now touched all of us who have read this, and in his own way (through you) has affected us directly - and that is how I believe humans can achieve immortality... we all have our own affect, whether or not we go down in history as a recognizable name, we still influence this world for others.

You did good!
