My Windows Critical Update service just sent me a message about
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. I am using Windows 98 and Explorer 5.5
at the recommendation of my computer tech and wonder why Microsoft is
saything that the E6 service pack is critical for me. Any ideas?

Yeah, I reckon it's just Microsoft just trying to get more downloads by
classing it as a "critical" update.

If IE5 works for you OK, then you don't need to upgrade. Just make sure you
go to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and download all
the critical patches for it.

However, IE6 SP1 is much better than IE5 and I would recommend installing
that, but it's up to you.

I have Windows 98 (first one) and IE6 SP1 and it runs perfectly fine, as
fast as it ever did and it was acceptable speed, definitely. I'm going to
try it at home on my 233 PII MMX PC which already has IE6 on it.

Just remember that at some point, probably sooner rather than later, IE5
support will be discontinued so your hand will be forced.

Stay with IE 5.5 SP2. Windows 98 is not a recommended operating
system to use with IE 6 or IE 6 SP1.

IE6 SP1 is identified as a critical update because it contains previously
released security patches that have been classified as "critical". IE6 SP1
also represents the bulk of work from the publicized security review and has
a number of changes designed to make your browsing and mail experience safer
and more stable than ever before.

Support is another issue that should be considered when making decisions
about what IE version to use. IE support timelines now match OS support
timelines.

IE6 SP1 will likely be the last IE service pack to install on W2K, WinMe,
NT4, and Win98SE. As such, updates to IE6SP1 will be fully supported and
available via windows update through the end of life for W2K, WinMe, NT4,
and Win98SE. IE6 SP1 shipped as part of XP SP1 in addition to having a
standalone install package for W2K, WinMe, NT4, and Win98SE. Future IE6
service packs will only be available as part of XP service packs...we are
currently doing the same thing with IE5.01/W2K service packs (there is no
standalone IE5.01 SP3 package)

There will likely not be any more IE5.5 service packs. Updates on IE5.5 SP2
will be available via windows update through end of life of WinMe (standard
support for IE5.5 SP2 on W2K, NT4, and Win98SE ends on 31 December 2002).
Updates to IE5.01 will available via windows update through the end of life
for W2K as part of W2K service packs (standard support for IE5.01 SP2 on NT4
and Win98SE ended on 30 June 2002).

Hope that helps!

A. Grey

Uninstall your Windows Critical Update Notification program and just
check manually like I do.

How is it much better? I have it installed on another machine, and I
really don't see much difference, except the way it (IE6) handles
searching from the taskbar seems a lot less convenient than before.

I appreciate your reply. I still wonder why the Critical Updates
program keeps reminding me of the IE6 SP when I am using IE5.5? It
would seem that it would know that and stop reminding me. Can't I
continue to use IE5.5 and only get updates to it? My computer tech
has told me that he has advised his clients to stay away from IE6,
especially in my case where I am using W98. Any further advice will
be appreciated.

Why? (I'm trying to decide if there's any reason to NOT go to IE6.)

I don't have specifics but he told me that operating with WIN98 IE 6
has some problems and it is just best to stay with 5.5. I think he
may have been also saying that generally, there are more problems with
6 than 5.5 with any operating sys.

IE6 install Zapped my Windows '98 o/s. Dont know what to do.

I am at my wits end.

I was installing IE6, when my system froze. I tried to close down the install,
but was
unable to. So I had to do a hard re-boot in the middle of an install. The
windows
help file from the disk says this will damage my operating system. It does not
say
what to do about it.

This was two days ago my Windows 98 has performed terribly since then. Here
are 6
symptoms:

1) In exiting, shutdown always freezes on the "Windows is shutting down"
screen.--I
have to do a hard reboot.

2) I can't use Windows help anymore from the hard something is wrong
apparently
with windows.chm, find.chm, and Msinfo32.hlp. They have been converted
apparently to
a html file, with that extension. On the list of files using Windows Explorer,
there is a
yellow question mark right beside the name.
3) AOL freezes during start-up fully 50% of the time and I have to re-boot

4) about 5/6 of the time I can not get to the Internet--the IE screen freezes
after the
frame appears but its all white, no data inside

5) the windows error message below appears about 1/3 of the time when I change
URLs
(switch web sites)

SPOOL32 caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:01b612cb.

Hello folks am new to the group but have this problem, it is driving
me NUTS! However I like the auto Windows Update system so do not want
to disable it. I just click and cancel every time it reminds me.
Regarding upgrade to IE6, my PC is from Gateway and their tech support
team recommended sticking with IE5.5, IE6 has some glitches with
Win98. So guess we just have to put up with it. Have decided NOT to
change to IE6 in spite of constant MS reminders. ;-)
