default email not allowing choice of OE for internet address links

I am currently running into a very similar situation as
this with outlook express and internet explorer 5. In
outlook express, under tools, options and general tab, the
default messaging program does not allow me to make
outlook express my default mail handler; however, the
newsgroup default is outlook express. To add another
twist to this problem, under the internet options programs
tab, the e-mail default does not even allow me to select
outlook express - it only shows me the outlook program in
the email section. How can I change this to reflect
outlook express? I ran the msinm.exe / reg as mentioned
and tried to change the default mail handler in outlook
express - it did not work. It still does not give me the
option to select outlook express under the internet
options programs. I also ensured that all components of
the outlook express have been installed. I have been using
outlook express to email messages without a problem. I
just can't email from this program when I click on an
address link. Do you have any suggestions for this problem?

Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.

Hi Frank,

I have already done this and I still do not get the option
to select outlook express as my email program for the
internet and when I select outlook express as my default
mail handler in outlook express, it selects it then when I
go back to outlook express it actually reflects that it
has not been selected.

I don't know then, in my experience that command has always done the trick.
Are you sure that you typed it as I gave it? The quotes and spaces are
important. Try copying it and pasting it into the Start | Run box.

There seems to be a rash of this problem happening.
Is Netscape Mail involved by any chance?

Steve Cochran thinks that that may do more damage
than an msimn /reg or even an IE Repair can fix!
He recommends reinstalling IE. However, somebody
else I was trying to help claimed that this had already
been tried so YMMV.

Regardless of whether Netscape is involved, it sounds as if she needs to either repair IE or do a reinstall of IE and OE, if she followed Frank's suggestion correctly.

to repair IE? If I need to reinstall IE and OE, how can I
save the existing databases for addresses, messages and
the favourites in the internet explorer? Would it be
beneficial to remove these programs first and then
reinstall? Or would it be fine to replace the existing
files?

Thanks Frank, Rob and Steve. I actually tried Frank's fix
again and this time, it worked. The only thing I did
different was: insteading picking up the directories and
file using the browse method from START RUN, I typed in
this command. Bingo! It works! I have not shut down the
system yet to see if any changes may happen. Yes, the
quotation marks were in the command. When I did this
yesterday, the outlook express program kept popping up.

You don't need to on a reinstall. The settings should persist..
