This is the error message I get when I start up my computer. It gets past the
first options screen (press F12 to bot from network etc), then it asks me
what mode I want to boot in, then any one I click on it loads XP Home for 2
seconds then an error screen comes up (the error code above) it does not
reboot the computer it just leaves the blue screen up and does nothing. I
understand I have to bypass the hard drive to get back into windows to run
chkdsk, and I also understand the problem is something to do with ntfs.sys,
but I have no floppy drive so those 6 floppys have already gone out of the
window. I guess the question is what do I do now next?

We had to get it fixed because it had my fiancee's near-finished thesis
on it. So we brought it to a pro. It took him 2 hours but he said it
was a fairly common problem too. It was about 60 bucks to fix here in
Poland. I don't know if that's cheap because everything's cheap here,
or expensive because it's a specialist job but that's what we paid.
Best of luck, and hopefully someone will figure out a simple solution
one day.

I fixed mine in an unconventional way. I took out my boot drive and used it
as a slave on another computer. When it booted, it ran CHKDSK and fixed the
errors. I put it back in my original computer and it booted fine.

Hi all,

Same questions as above. Ha anyone found a solution. I get the same error
code except for the second which is 0x86771A98.

It seems like quite a few people have had the same problem and there are
lot's of questions out, but I havn't seen any solution yet.

Any help would be most appreciated.

what has happened is the boot partition is corrupted - you can read more

you have 2 options:

if you need to recover data from the disk you have to install the drive
as a slave in another computer and fix it as Tim did above.

If you don't need to recover your data you can boot from the vista dvd
and delete the partition completely, then recreate and re-install. if
you don't have your vista product key handy you need to use the first
method.

Just wanted to let you know that the problem eventually was resolved by
running DSKCHK /R.

I found that on a Dell XPS M1330, the SATA setting had to be changed from
ACHI to ATA in order to get the system to boot. After a successful boot
(which included an automatic chkdsk), I could change it back to ACHI.
