Greetings all,

I followed the tasks listed on this site:
http://www.longhornblogs.com/rrelyea/archive/2005/09/16/PDC2005Software.aspx
for installing the WinFX CTP binaries but I cannot run sample code. I
get the exception:

Culture name 'cn' is not supported

I also get a NullRefernceException if I attempt to run XAMLPAD.

I have Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 installed.
I am running Windows Media Center (XP) with SP 2

I have directories for the following framework versions:

v1.0.3705
v1.1.4322
v2.0.40607
v2.0.50215

Does anyone know why these exceptions would be thrown?

Thank you,
Josh

Just so we can reproduce this problem, what is the default culture set to on
your machine?

Hi Ashish,
Under Control Panel I see United States and English, and in Internet
Explorer I see en-us as the setting. Is this what you mean?

Thanks,
Josh

Josh,
What he meant was the language of the operating system itself. From my
understanding you have English version of XP Media Center Edition.

I wasn't able to reproduce the problem you are seeing. My only guess right
now is that this behavior was brought by some kind of conflict, possibly
with the previous CTP that was installed on your machine.

You mentioned you have v2.0.40607 directory in your framework folder. That
is from the older version of CLR. You might want to remove it and also
remove any traces of old assemblies from the GAC.

Alik, thank you. That is correct, I have English XP Media Center.

If I uninstall that will it affect Visual Studio Team Suite Beta 2?

Actually, I tried to uninstall the framework from Add/Remove but it
told me it would harm other applications, so it did not let me do it.

Aaron Stebner is trying to help me with this too. He suggested I use
MSIINV.exe to list all my programs.

I've posted that list of programs on my site here:

http://www.ultravioletconsulting.com/Default.aspx?tabid=76&dnnbbfid=4&dnnbbtid=6

Does that give any ideas?
Thank you,
Josh

I have taken a different approach to "solving" this for the time being.
I installed Virtual PC at work, installed Win XP and the WinFX bits on
it. It worked. Then I burned the virtual drive to a DVD and took it
home. It worked there too :)

I'm glad this approach worked out good for you.
Were you able to get this to work on your Media Center machine?
I still think that the reason is for this error is old bits or settings from
your previous install.
Here is a script to run after uninstalling old WinFX to make sure old files
are gone: http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2005/09/20/471815.aspx
It is not guaranteed to solve this problem but it's a way to make sure old
Avalon is gone.

Alik,
Well, I didn't have any previous WinFX bits installed. The only thing I
could imagine causing problems might be that older .net 2.0 framework
beta, though I could not successfully remove it as I recall. I did
rename the framework directory to 2.0_old to obfuscate it, though that
did nothing.

I uninstalled the WinFX SDK, the Visual Studio Extensions, and the
WinFX runtime components, and redid the install, to no avail. Should I
try to uninstall again, then run that script, and repeat the install
(even without having any previous CTP bits installed?)

Within Virtual PC, I was able to download TheRHogue's 3d samples and
modify the carousel app to load images dynamically. Eventually I want
to make it load images from web service calls to Flickr.com.
