Hello,
I have been looking around for awhile for some info to dev some MCE add-ins
for use on the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender.
Could anyone help me get started on my way to making programs?
I have the SDKs, and I know my way around it a little bit, but I don't know
how to get anything to work on the Extender.
Thanks all!

it would help if you had a more specific question.

i've written a couple MCE programs that extend to the XBox 360 (source code
included).
http://www.brains-N-brawn.com/mceVideoSearch/
http://www.brains-N-brawn.com/mceDivX360/

it's basically just like writing an AddIn for MCE, but some things won't
work over remote desktop.
DirectX will not render, and the display will only update 3 to 5 fps,
and there might be some lag from the remote session.
sound effects don't work.
the remote session will have reduced priveliges.
installation is slightly different because you need the /allusers flag.

Good luck,
casey

Hello,
I sent you an email about a month ago and you told me about this user group,
first I would like to thank you for giving me the info on this place!

You asked about specifics, well, I would like to make something that will
play a video file stored online for starts, I have tried this in an asx file
and it works, now I want to build an interface, something like the Comedy
Centeral Motherload, or MTV Overdrive, only less complex, I would also like
to work with some shockwave flash aswell. Like one page of my add in will
have a video feed, another page will have a shockwave flash in it, and other
pages will have other things.
But first things first, I need to know what I am doing before I jump in, I
am certified in HTML 3.2, and I am a sophmore in college for my bachelors in
Software Engineering, so I'm not a noob to the tools used, but I am a noob
to the way everything comes togeather in this, In time I would like to
provide other web enabled content to the mcx, but I just need to start
simple for now.

Is there any way you can make a "Hello World" program of sorts that will
work on the Media Center Extender? That would be the best place for me to
start, being able to see how everything fits togeather, and learning how to
make the add-in work, I know that there are several steps that need to be
taken before the add-in will run, like strong names and such, and
registering the add-in with the computer.
So how about a crash course "hello world" program that also teaches me what
I need to do to make a strong name, what i put in the mcl file, and whatever
else is needed to get the thing to run on my 360,
Thanks,
Joe

good point ... we do need end to end samples for the developer community.
actually those should be a part of the SDK or on
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mce/

until then, this is the list that i started from (along with reading the
SDK)
http://blog.retrosight.com/PermaLink,guid,6cb4b9e7-9d94-452b-88ff-6f8c2b55d908.aspx

these should help you piece together a hello world Hosted HTML (or AddIn)
application to run on your MCE PC,
and then we can help you get it to run on an extender.

Thanks,
casey

That is the place I got the information for the "HelloWorld" add-in from
that guy's article on oriley.

What one of the tutorials should I use in your link, because I have tried
some of these and got myself confused with it, I also found out that after I
registered an add in, even if I unregister it, and delete it, it still runs,
so I was stuck with a pop up on my mce that said "hello world" every time I
started up the MCE, it got so annoying I reformated my computer to get rid
of it.
But again, what one of these would you suggest, if I can figure out how to
do this, you and I can make a hello world add-in for everyone who wants to
develop on the Media Center Extender.

I still have confusions on strong names, because the hello world I used
everything was done already, all I had to do was copy and paste everything
and run a .cmd file.
So my first question would be on that, what do I do to make the strong names
and other files that are needed to make an add-in work? I could not get a
clear answer on that from the SDK.
