I am trying to do a fresh install of Win98se on a new computer I just
finishhed putting together.
It is a Celeron 500 with a P6BAT-ME Mother boardand 128 MB SDRAM and a
13.3 Fujitsu Hard drive
When I run setup I get the following Error
"SUWIN caused a segment load failure in module SYSDETMG.DLL at
0003:BEF6"
and I get booted out to the command prompt.

What is going on???

Bob, make sure that system date on that computer is set to year 2000.
After you boot from the startup disk, type:

date

If the date is wrong, change it.

The first thing I did on the first boot was go into the bios and set the
date and time and autodetect my drives.
But I think I found my problem , after following a few threads in this
newsgroup I copied all the WIN98 directory to my hard drive and did the
install from there.
On the first attempt I got some WYSE error so set up config.sys to install
Himeme.sys and emm386.exe and right now I'm half way though install and it
is just flying.
thanks to all who posted problems and fixes on this newsgroup

I guess I was a little premature on my celebration.
I got back to my computer and setup had hung up and I had to reboot. Now I am
consistantly getting
SUWIN GPF errors in KRNL386.exe
W98SETUP GPF errors in KRNL386.exe and USER.exe
W98SETUP GPF errors in GDI.exe

I have done the following
1) Disabled external cache
2) Slowed processor to 300 mHz in Bios
3) Tries removing 64 Mb SDRAM modules one at a time
4) Disabled UDMA on Hard Drive
5) Changed CDROM to secondary IDE
6) Changed Video Card to PCI model
7) Copied all Win98 CABS to a directory on C: and ran setup from there
8) booted from floppy
9) booted from C:

when they dismantle microsoft I hope they shoot the programmers

Please help me! I've never had so much exasperating trouble in my life.

Can this be the cause?

System File Checker Tool Extracts Incorrect File Versions
USER.EXE, GDI.EXE or KERNL386.EXE.The wrong version of the file may be
extracted from the Mini.cab cabinet file. This can result in the inability
to start Windows 98 (for example, your computer may stop responding) or
"Windows Protection Error" error messages in normal and Safe mode.

I don't think this would be it as the only files on the system are the Win98se
files and there would only be one version.
I tried installing on an old Pentium 100 with the hard drive from the new
system and everything went ok so my hard rive and cd is ok. Now I am going to
try another CDROM and then some memory from another system
Any other ideas let me know

Ok I tried a 32Mb SDRAM for a working system and got the same errors. Tried a
different CDROM no change. My supplier is sending out a new CPU and MB which of
course I have to pay for including shipping , which I will try. I will report back
after I try the new components.
