I can't run defrag becuase it restarts itself. apprentlly
it complains about running program. There is no
application running but it seems the windows modules or
DLL or device drivers looking as legitimate application.
Defrag does not say who is the cauase of the problem. I
even tried to run defrag at start up by modifing the
standard registary settings "run once" field. My widows
version is w98 4.10.1998. this probelm happend after
upgrade. Does any body knows what's the problem. Thanks.

you dont need to mess with the registry for this...

If you have run a "Thorough" Scandisk all the way through and "if you
have a screen saver to run after several minutes turn it off before
running Defrag. Also, let Defrag restart until it says it has restarted
10 times. If it still keeps retarting, then run Defrag in Safe Mode or
even in DOS only mode.

If ScanDisk "Thorough" mode has run all the way through and screen
savers are off then Defrag *should* not restart. Also you might wanna
disable and close as many programs/icons that are runing in SysTray
Also.

With nothing running in the forground and background Defrag has no
reason to restart.

Try "DiskAction", below, to determine what writes to that partition.

1. Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver-- None)
2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management-- Always On,Never,Never,Never)
3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps.
4. Suspend Task Scheduler
5. Turn off interfering programs, until Scandisk/Defrag no longer constantly re-start. Start with
your Virus Scanner, using it's Tray button. Then all else, that way, if necessary. Then, if
necessary, Ctrl-Alt-Del all but Explorer & Systray, or use "EndItAll2" from PCMag (below), which
actually does steps (1) thru (4) as well. Afterwards, a reboot will turn them all back on.
6. "START, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup", or use "HDValet" from PCMag.
7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all three items under "Scandisk,
Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If you want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck
"Automatically fix errors" on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.)
8. "START - Run - Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the unmovables..

The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them;
but DEFINITELY turn off the Virus Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and
certainly after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when this says so:
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's CrackUp, by Gregory A. Wolking & Bob Flanders. Also, take DiskAction, to
determine what is constantly writing to the HDD, which causes the restarts. Take BHOCop too.

Follow what Die Spammer said but defrag might still
restart, this would depend on how fragmented your
system is, what it needs to rearange, how much ram
you have, and swap file size. Run it as suggested
from a cold bootup. Prior to the cold boot clean
out your Applog, Cookies, Temp, and Temporary Interner
Files. Also R-click the task bar, Properties, Start
Menu Programs, and Clear this will clear out documents
recently viewed. Now shut down wait 30-45 sec then
restart.
