When I reboot (or boot) my Pentium 3 system with WIN98SE I
almost invariably get a blue screen just after the icons
load on my desktop, but before anything loads into the
task bar at start up (e.g., firewall, Iomega QuikSync,
HotSync, etc.). The message on the blue screen
States: "The volume that was removed had open files on
it"...next time make sure that the volume is removable...
(paraphrasing the second part).
I believe I opened the CD-ROM or DVD months ago to my PC's
chagrine but I continue to get this message; sometimes I
have to reboot two-four times before I get my PC back.

What can I do? Thanks!

If you have recently added a Promise controller card, take a look at: http://www.softsynth.com/jsyn/support/removed_error.html for a detailed explanation of the problem. Then go to

What is a Promise controller card? Could you give me an
example?

You can have either a add-in card that controls your hard drives
or a promise chip (or other vendors) on the motherboard which
requires a add-in driver.

If you have recently added a Promise/Maxtor controller card, take a look at:

http://www.softsynth.com/jsyn/support/removed_error.html for a detailed
explanation of the problem.

Then go and download the fix, which is the updated driver. Or if you
have a controller chip that needs a driver see your motherboard or
system maker for current one.
