The computer doesn't "hang" it's just the mouse pointer won't move, everything else works.

Did that, no relevent results. Or if there were, I got so burried in the irrelevent articles that I
missed it. Most seem to refer to USB mouse. This one is a Compaq PS2 mouse.

Mine sometimes does that, too. I use a workaround involving a desktop
shortcut.
R-click a blank area of your desktop and select New -> Shortcut. Type
the following command line:
C:\windows\control.exe sysdm.cpl,system,1
Select a name for your shortcut, eg Mouse_Reset.
R-click on the shortcut, select Properties, and choose a shortcut key
combination, eg Ctrl-Alt-M.
Now when your mouse hangs, type Ctrl-Alt-M to bring up Device Manager.
Type Alt-F to Refresh the devices. Your mouse should now be back.

It did begin to take two/three tries to get it to sleep. Sometimes even
then it would wake on it's own in ten/so minutes. Also, sometimes after
I wake it, numlock is mysteriously off. (But now I've found an article
for that.)

Do you notice whether the repeat rate and/or repeat delay are also
affected? If so, then that would suggest that power to your keyboard
has been interrupted. I use a three-finger workaround for this, too.
Haven't noticed: hardly ever use it, sorry. The article says only
NUMLOCK is involved...

NUM LOCK Indicator Light Remains Off After Resuming From Standby
.....Quote...........
SYMPTOMS
When your Windows 98-based computer resumes from standby mode, you may
notice that the NUM LOCK indicator light on your keyboard may not light,
although the NUM LOCK key may still work correctly.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if your computer's Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
does not respond correctly to Windows 98's instruction to relight the
NUM LOCK key.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, press the NUM LOCK key twice. To resolve this
issue, contact the manufacturer of your computer's motherboard to
inquire about the availability of an updated BIOS that resolves this
issue.
