SET Temp=I:TEMP
SET Tmp=%TEMP%
then changed the registry key as follows:-
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Explorer\VolumeCaches\temorary Files and modified the
folder for temp folder to show I:\temp
Then with TweakUi I moved the Recent Documents (under MY
Computer in Tweak) to the I: partition and Temp Internet
Files through Tiools\options settings move folder aslo
to I:.
NOW THE PROBLEM
I have downoaded zone alarm and then tried to run the
install but each time I get a error
box "I:\temp\GLF40A1.tmp could not be opened" and again i
tried GLF9297.tmp could not be opened" I guess it is
something I have done with the temp files but do not
understand what??
Plse help
Reboot and empty your Temp folder.
How much free space is on the partition I:\?
BTW, I hope that was a typo in your autoexec.bat....it is not I:Temp, but I:\Temp
Change the autoexec to this, for safety:
SET TEMP=I:\TEMP
SET TMP=I:\TEMP

For the life of me I would of never recommended to put the temp in I:\temp
in the first place and would of left it right where it was - I don't
understand why someone told him to do that and how was it relevant to what
Mike needs or does?
I know it wasn't you Bill but lucky you I clicked on your post to express
my wonderment why nobody questioned that? ..although Mike did not ask that
particular question did he...

Actually I stand in amazement at this statement by Mike in his first post;
" I have followed some advice by mvp's taken off
the net and change the tekp files to go to a seperate
partition away from c: and the windows os."

It's not unusual to move temp files off the system volume, but the folder
\windows\temp should be left too, in case some program is "hard-wired"
to use that instead of %temp%. One advantage of having %temp%, TIF,
cookies, the swap file, and other "busy" folders and files on another volume
is that it helps keep the system volume defragged.
Of course, moving the swap file is another debate in itself.

Hmm, actually you were right. But I don't know what it means. Probably,
it is unwise to have two folders named TEMP, when one of them is also an
environment variable.

FYI I used this URL http://aumha.org/search.htm
for creating the temp as I have done and in the past all
was good until a reformat of c: and reinstall of OS for
other reasons and now this file error prob.

If you have the values entered correctly, there should not be
any problem with a moved %temp%. However for now, you
might want to delete the %temp% statements from autoexec.bat
and put the registry back to c:\windows\temp, and try the installs
again. (Don't forget to reboot for the new %temp% values to take
affect.) If nothing else, this will rule out this part of the problem.

On DOS, it could be a backward compatible leftover from when DOS did not
support subdirectories, and \ delimiters were not needed.

Hi Mike,
Since you asked me, the only help or advice I can give you is that since
you refer to yourself as a newbie which I respect immensely, but rather
than what you're doing I'd suggest in balance with your experience verses
any gain you would receive is to keep it simple which is a very good thing.
My advice is to leave the temp, swap, etc, just the way it is; the
difference you yourself would ever notice with modifications is minuscule
and not worth the effort and what you're going through right now, unless
it's your thing to want to do.
all the best,
Rick

yes understood, but is not something I would recommend for the average
person really at all unless they were a techie and wanted to experiment,
but running defrag on occasion is more than sufficient and the millisecond
second of time saved otherwise is negligible I think, and more often like
in this case like with Mike is an inappropriate priority and not at all
worth the effort. (unless it's a techie personal project play experiment
type thing then the sacred value lies in the mind of the beholder)
> Of course, moving the swap file is another debate in itself.
..for sure..
have a nice day Bill,
Rick
However, Dundat has shown, "c:temp" can refer to two different folders.
(See that portion of this thread.) I'm thinking the problem with that
one is that %temp% is a system variable. Also, Glee has said Win95 &
other OS are different. Therefore, it is probably best always to use the
backslash (\), as you never do know who is looking in.

I can easily understand the challenge part and do it often myself, although in
this case I may have picked another project subject is all, but I certainly
support your enjoyment & inquisitiveness.
