Problems with screen resolution

Have just installed a new motherboard, processor and
memory. Started system but the screen icons were too
large. Went into display settings and increased the
resolution to the maximum that the monitor could handle
but that made them very small. However a reboot was forced
and on booting I cant get past the first Windows screen. I
cannot get into Safe Mode to change the resolution.
Would appreciate some help with this problem

Did you reinstall Windows over itself after swapping out all that hardware?

At this point I have not reinstalled Windows simply
changed the resolution on the Display Settings.

If the motherboard and processor swap involved a significant change to the
system, you will probably have to reinstall Windows over itself to repair a
system file (VMM32.VXD) that contains drivers for your old motherboard and
CPU.  After this you will have to reinstall any Windows Updates you've
installed on the system.
