I'm backing up a set of subdirectories with .mp3 files using the
multiple CD method in the new Roxio CD/DVD burner 6.0. It looks good,
except that the files are burned in whatever order they were put on
the hard drive. Not good if the set of CD disks is 9 disks worth and
the same directory structure is written to all 9 disks, and a
perticular directories content could have been written to any of the
9 disks. It takes forever to find the files.
Back in in the DOS days there was a utility that rewrote the FAT
structure, insuring that the directories and their contents were in
an alphabetical order.
Hoping someone has already solved this problem and could pass on some
info on this.
In any case, it would be the sequence in the directory entry, not the FAT
that would be important.
If you want files written to CD in a particular order, I don't believe you
will be able to use a backup facility.
The simplest option might be to find a cataloguing program that will enable
you to list the files in any sequence you choose, and direct you straight to
the applicable CD. Note that this assumes that the backup program is simply
copying files to CD and it is NOT creating a backup file (if it creates a
backup file the cataloguing program won't be able to look inside that file
to discover the contents of a particular disk).
