I am looking for work - either short-term contract work, or outsourced work
that I and/or the team of freelancers I am associated with can take on.
My CV follows (in ascii, e-mail if you would like a properly formatted Word
document) - the other people involved include a range of skilled
programmers, artists and producers, and we can take on most forms of work.
Please get in touch if you have anything you think might be possible for
me/us to work on. I can work on-site if need be, and I also have my own
kit (including CD-Writer, scanner etc.) so can work from home, whichever is
more appropriate.
I look forward to hearing from you all...

Previous Work
Labyrinth Productions
Lead Programmer
Localisation of the game Drowned God into numerous European
languages. In charge of all programming and related
technical issues.
Epic Multimedia Group
Senior Programmer
I joined EMG to work on the critically acclaimed game Drowned
God. My work consisted of debugging / rewriting elements of
core code, and porting the code to Windows 3.1. I was
sometimes responsible for overseeing parts of the production
process, managing the testers and at the very end, became
'acting Lead Programmer' and was sent to Los Angeles to
liaise with the distributors (Inscape) and oversee last
minute development, testing, and gold-mastering. I was on
the design team for Cult, the sequel to Drowned God.
Recruit Multimedia
Freelance Multimedia Work
Revolution
HTML Design for Microsoft Web-sites. Working from hard-copy,
using Quark Xpress, Illustrator and Photoshop, I created HTML
documents for local language versions of Windows 95, Office
95 and The Microsoft Network.
Central Office of Information
HTML for the Department of Health league tables. I corrected
and modified previously written HTML code and spreadsheet
files.
Crown Business Communications
Corporate Presentations for Barclays Plc. Preparing slide
and on-screen presentations using Powerpoint and Photoshop.
The Zen Room Limited
Managing Director
The Zen Room was a multimedia partnership comprising a small
number of programmers and artists.
My roles in The Zen Room were varied. On the
business/management front, I liaised with clients to get
business, conducted all the market research marketing,
promotion etc. I prepared business proposals to obtain
funding, project managed the rest of the team, and performed
the day-to-day administration. On the production side, I
have been involved in software design and programming, 2D/3D
image design, and I designed, implemented and promoted our
company web-site.
The Zen Room originally disbanded (and is soon restarting
with a modified core team) due to a lack of capital, and my
desire to move away from London. Some of our work is
outlined below :-
Recent work
Design & Implementation of various screensavers.
Notting Hill Publishing
Design and Programming of Cybertation for the BIMA
Nominated CD-ROM The Evolution of Life (with Richard
Dawkins ). We have been involved with Notting Hill
Publishing from their beginning, and were brought in
because of our specialist knowledge of evolutionary art
and evolutionary programming.
We were part of the design team for The Evolution of
Life, and designed and implemented the Cybertation
engine, which uses advanced genetic theory (a branch of
Artificial Intelligence) to illustrate Richard Dawkins
theories on evolution. The system generates and
animates 3D "virtual sculptures" in real-time and runs
under Microsoft Windows. It was developed in Microsoft
Visual C++ under Windows NT, using the Reality Lab 3D
libraries.
Cybertation has since been extended into an Internet
product and can be seen on Notting Hill's web-site
(www.nottinghill.com).
My role :- Software Design and Programming (jointly),
Project Management, client liaison.
Carat Interactive
3D icon design for a web-site. Working to a close brief,
we designed and modeled anthropomorphic characters to guide
users around a web-site. These were then rendered to
poster-size for display in the reception area of both Carat
Interactive and the client whose site the work was for.
My role :- 3D modeling (jointly), project management and client liaison.
Wizard & Genius, G.B. Posters, A Bigger Splash, The Chaos Laboratory
Images for Posters and Postcards. We created and marketed a
portfolio of abstract 3D images which have been licensed for
worldwide distribution.
My role :- 3D Programming and Design (jointly), Marketing, Client
Liaison,
Market Research, Writing a business plan to obtain funding.
Agency Work
I have worked in a variety of capacities, ranging from Office Junior,
through
preparing presentations, up to PA at Director level. This work has been
conducted
in a variety of companies ranging from small local firms, to media and
blue-chip
companies. Some notable jobs/clients follow :-
Banker's Trust
Preparing Presentations. Using Corel Draw, PowerPoint and Freelance
Graphics to prepare corporate slide presentations for multi-million pound
share deals.
BPME International
Business Proposals. I worked closely with the Directors of three
companies
to prepare detailed proposals for a number of multi-million dollar deals
(e.g.
the new Thai railway system).
EMAP Publishing
Advertising DTP. Preparing advertising copy and graphics in Quark XPress
for a popular computer magazine.
Other notable clients include :- Channel Four, The Guardian, Guinness
Plc, TSB,
Lloyd's Bank, and many local small firms and charities.
Skills
I have been using computers since the first home-computers were released
when I was 8, and
over this time, have consistently used them for international
communications, creative outlet and
programming.
Technical/Computing Skills
I am familiar with the following operating systems :- MS-DOS, Microsoft
Windows, Windows 95
and Windows NT, Unix, X-Windows, Apple Macintosh and Commodore Amiga.
I have programmed many languages including C, C++, Java, Basic, and Lingo.
I have installed many systems, and have a thorough understanding of the
hardware and operating
systems of PCs; how to set up new hardware/software and how to troubleshoot
problems.
Telecommunications Skills
I have been using computers for global communications for over 10 years,
originally old text-
based services, now the World Wide Web. In The Zen Room, I used the
Internet daily for
research activities. I have planned and constructed a web-site, and have
an understanding of
what makes web-sites successful, how to market/advertise successfully on
the Internet, and how
to use a variety of up-to-the-minute technologies (especially Java). I
have recently started
working on multi-player Internet games in Java.
Creative Ability
I have extensive experience with Adobe Photoshop, ImageFX, and 3D Studio
(and now Max) and
have in the past done projects using Director (including some Lingo),
Illustrator, Quark Xpress,
Pagemaker, Adobe Premiere, Asymetrix 3D F/X, Deluxe Paint and Corel Draw.
Due to the length
of time I have been working with and switching packages, I find I am able
to learn new packages
very quickly; picking up the basics usually in a matter of minutes, and
often becoming competent
in a few days.
I am particularly interested in the overlap between traditional media and
computer-techniques;
have taken courses in Photography, Art and Video Production, and
experimented with lo-tech
special effects photography which I feel make an interesting complement to
hi-tech computer
effects. My study of Art, Photography and Video has given me an increased
sense of aesthetics,
composition and timing, which I am now able to apply to my computer work.
As part of my video production course, I directed a short drama; also
acting as Lighting,
Cameraman and Editor.
I have been writing creatively since I was very young - poems,
short-stories, freelance magazine
articles, and short novels and screenplays. I recently took a short
dramatic writing course.
I also have an interest in Music, and have started to experiment with Dance
Music programming
in Cubase.
Artificial Intelligence
During my time with The Zen Room we have been working in a specialist field
of AI; Genetic
Programming. This involves applying of nature's methods of evolution to
computing problems.
We have been working on ideas involving the application of Genetic
Programming to more
original areas; particularly computer games, artistic tools (e.g. Photoshop
and 3D Studio plug-ins)
and Internet (especially Java) applications.
Business Experience
I have taken courses in Management, Economics and Financial Management, and
Human-
Computer Interaction.
During my time with The Zen Room, I developed a great deal of experience
with everyday
business tasks, such as accounting, client liaison, administration etc.,
and higher-level
management tasks; market research, marketing strategy, negotiating
contracts, preparing
business plans/proposals to obtain finance, presentations to clients, and
project managing a small
team of diverse individuals.
My agency work has enabled me to work in a large variety of different
establishments, including
large banks; media corporations, small production companies and charities.
These different
experiences and job-roles have given me a thorough understanding of how
these established
professionals operate, their strengths and weaknesses, an insider-view
which I found very helpful
in running my own company.
