I am trying to use a Bluetooth device that does not have a pairing code in
Vista. When I choose "pair without using a code" in Bluetooth Devices control
panel, it pairs OK and adds a Service, Serial port ( SPP) 'AT Serial' COM4.
But when I call CreateFile to open COM4, Vista shows a "click here" box
informing me that a device is trying to connect, which brings up a dialog
asking for the pairing code.

I know that this works with some USB/Bluetooth dongles but both my Dell
laptop's built in BT and my LM Industries USB dongle seem to have the same
problem.

Is this simply an incompatibility between the BT dongle and Vista or is
there anything that could be done in my program or in the peripheral's
firmware?

I saw the same problem. It's mostly likely a driver problem. You'd better
contact Dell to solve it.
