Create VU meter (C#)

I need to capture the audio input level (dB) from a sound device. I'm new to
DirectX, and I cant seem to find a way to do this. I figurered out how to
capture the data from the device (DirectSound), but I need to create a VU
meter as well.
I may have missed out on something, but I hope someone can help me with this.

You can create a standard VU meter / peak meter by doing some simple
processing on the samples that you capture.
