Hi, all, I've just had a weird problem emerge on my Win2K Pro machine.
when booting, the following message will appear:

Invalid Boot.ini file
Booting from c:\winnt

And Windows will boot normally.

My Boot.ini file is in C:\ and contains the following lines:

Boot/Installed=6:05:44 12/23/2002
Boot/Revision=3.03.2.2b
Boot/LoopBackIp=127.0.0.1
Boot/CryptoDisable=FALSE
Boot/Priority=0

Can anyone see anything obviously wrong with my setup? This isn't a
fatal error, since I can still get into Windows without any hassle,
but it is annoying.

Thanks in advance

Johnny (Loopy)

Should be simular to;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

Try booting the recovery console and at a command prompt issue the command
fixboot
to repair the boot sector.

Right, I've installed the Recovery console, from the Win2K as the
instructions say in the help, but Ican't seem to find how to start it
up and typing "fixboot" in a cmd window doesn't work. Any ideas?

Regards

Johnny

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Okay, I've fished out my disc, booted off it and gotten into the
Recover Console and tried fixboot, but I still get the same error. Is
there anything else I can try, after listing the available commands, I
can't see anything obvious that may help me fix this problem.

Try creating a boot disk. For the floppy to successfully boot Windows 2000
the disk must contain the "NT" boot sector. Format a diskette (on an NT
machine, not a DOS/Win9x, so the NT boot sector gets written to the floppy),
and copy ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini to it; and possibly ntbootdd.sys.
Only replace boot.ini with this one. This assumes Windows 2000 is installed
to drive0 and on the first partition.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt="Windows 2000" /fastdetect

Then try booting from the floppy. See if it boots without error.
