because of the following error:
RegOpenKeyEx(system\setup\pid) returned error 2 (2)

Fatal error

Setup was unable to retrieve the product ID of the system
you are installing. The win 2k media may be damaged (I
don't think so). Please contact product support.

This is being installed over win 98SE, and has already
upgraded to NTFS....

The win 2k CD is an OEM version that I have bought.

Any suggestions anyone?????

Hi Alan,

I have researched this error and found only a couple of instances of this
issue. Either the media was bad, or the CD-ROM was not working properly.

The first thing that I would try would be using different media. If that
doesn't work perhaps you can swap out your CD-ROM drive to see if this is
the issue.

If neither of these steps result in any type of resolution you can try
doing a parallel install of the operating system:

HOW TO: Perform a Parallel Installation of Windows 2000 WGID:322
ID: 266465.KB.EN-US
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;266465

Please make sure that you follow the directions very carefully if you
choose to follow this article. If the steps are not carefully followed you
can over write data on the drive.

If this works, you then know that the media and hardware are working
properly.

Thanks,
