I have a network 172.31.x.x /255.240.0.0 with Server 2003 and RRAS deployed.

What IP Range and Subnet should I use at the remote office and what static
routes would need to be setup to make the networks completely connected so
computers from one side can ping computers from the other side.

Thanks for any suggestions!

doesn't matter what ip range you will use. the WAN of the router should have
one ip from 172.31.x.x.

I don't understand... here is my setup...

Main Office
internal network card 172.31.1.1 (255.240.0.0)
external network card 24.123.15.218

Remote Office
internal network card 172.29.1.1 (255.240.0.0)
external network card 24.123.171.14

I created a demand dial VPN connection from remote office to main office. I
can ping from the remote office server to network devices at the main
office. When I try to ping from and internal machine at the remote office I
can not reach the other network.

It asks me for a static route to initiate the connection and I have tried
several things. What should that be?

Also, someone told me I may need to configure a routing protocol like RIP is
OSPF to get this working, are they right?

Thanks,
Andrew

sorry, I gave your the wrong information. But if you post route table after
VPN, we should be able to figure out the problem.

To connect two sites, you need to use a router-to-router (or LAN-to-LAN)
connection between the subnets. A normal VPN connection does not have enough
routing info to do the job. (It is based on a client-server model, so the
"server" machine only has a host route back to the client. It cannot route
to machines behind the calling machine). Look for router to router in help
for details. The two sites need to be in different subnets.

Briefly, you set up demand-dial interfaces at both sites, with static
routes to the "other" subnet linked to these interfaces. You then set up one
RRAS server to call the other, using the demand-dial interface name on the
answering router as the username. When the connection is made, both
demand-dial interfaces are bound to the connection, and the associated
routes are added to the routing table. So each router has a route to the
"other" subnet through the VPN tunnel.

as bill posted, if 172.31.x.x and 172.29.x.x are in the different subnet,
that should work. the prefect example will be main office uses
10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 and remote office uses 172.129.0.0/255.255.0.0.
