Hi

Hope somebody can assist with a problem that I'm having setting up a modem
for receiving incoming RAS connections - this is something I do all the time
without a problem but on one particular machine doesn't work.

I'm running Windows 2000 Server SP2 on a Dell 1400SC server, the modem is a
external 3Com US Robotics 56k Fax modem connected to COM2. COM 1 has an APCC
UPS connected.

I have installed the modem in the control panel, (Phone and modem) and the
modem works fine for dialout connections so presumeably is setup correctly.

I then have gone, as normal, to setup RRAS. I have run the RRAS
administration utility and configured the server for "Remote Access", i have
no used RADIUS and have allocated both netbeui and tcp/ip for the
connections as well as defining a range of ip-addresses for the incoming
connections.

So far, no problem. Normally though, under "ports" in the rras setup for
the server, I would see all the normal WAN Miniports with the modem listed
at the end. The modem doesn't show! I have therefore clicked into the
Ports properties, where I can see the modem listed configured as Used by
"none". I click the button to configure the modem device and tick the box
for "Remote access connections (inbound only)", click ok and the modem then
shows as being Used by "RAS" as expected.

The problem then shows up when I click "OK" to exit the port properties
screen. When I do this I get a pop-up error message which reads as follows
: -

"The port information canot be saved. Cannot complete this function
(800703eb)"

I cannot find this message on MSDN, nor from Dell technical support ("We
didn't supply the modem so go away!").

Does anybody have anything I can try?

Out of interest, I have since used an identical modem (bought at the same
time) on another identical machine (bought from Dell the week before) and
the modem configured itself straight away using the original process (ie it
appeared automatically after configuring RRAS originally).

Many thanks in advance, I'd be grateful if any reply can be copied to me by
email as well as to the group.
