We have a laptop that we recently reconfigured from
Win98Se to Win2K. Now we can not log on to the network
from that computer though network resources (like the
internet access) are available (ruling out hardware
problems). We receive an error message as soon as we
attempt to connect: "Duplicate Computer Name Exists on
Network". I have spent hours on this (verifying hardware
and software configurations) to no avail. We have one
other Win2K machine on the network which runs error-free.
Any suggestions?

TIA,
Dan Brown

Open CMD prompt and type nbtstat -c
Check and see which name you may be conflicting with. You
also may want to check the WINS server for static and old
entries.

Check the name of the win2k pc with the problems (control
panel, system, Network Identification tab then check the
other workstations you have connected to the network for a
duplicate name or just change the name of the pc you are
having problems with to something other that what it
currently is. You can change the name from the same
location that you checked it.

Hope this helps!

There are no other computers on the network with the same
name. I did change the computer's name anyhow to see if
that would make a difference. It did not. Also, this
computer will not recognize the domain name of the server
(returns an error that the domain name does not exist).

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the reply. I checked this. It returned with
the correct network connection info and stated that there
was "No name in cache". This adds to confusion if the
network is saying there is a duplicate to no name. I also
ran ipconfig and received similar results that gave all
the correct info for the ip address, gateway, server, etc.

I meant nbtstat -n and see which status has conflict. If
you have two cards in the system the conflict can happen
also. Probably an onboard and pcmcia card.
